Parenting after a Loss

Lets talk poop

FTM here, My DS has not had a bowel movement since Wednesday night, it was late around 11:30pm but still Wednesday he was very cranky all Thursday morning, so by late afternoon he had not had a bowel movement, [he has at least one a day] he was very fussy, and curling up crying.  He has not been a fussy baby.  I called Pediatrician and was told to give him pear juice every 4hours diluted with water or add to formula and continue the gas drops before each formula bottle.  If this persist she would like to see him 1st thing Monday morning.

Its Friday night, he isn't fussy at all but still no poop. However he cries his eyes out when he passes gas.   Has anyone's LO had this happen?  What did you do?  Did it work?  How long did it take?

I feel so helpless when I cant make my DS feel better. Sad

Beth

Re: Lets talk poop

  • Does he have enough wet diapers? I am guessing your DS is constipated which I don't have advice for. At about 5wks, DS didn't poop everyday, but we were told that was ok. GL, I hope your DS feels better soon.

  • Per our pediatrician you can also try prune juice for constipation (same mixture as pear juice).  Don't have any advice on how well it works since DS was a twice a day boy and DD hasn't had any problems yet.

  • When a friend of mine's LO was blocked up she inserted the rectal thermometer and that helped get things going. GL!

  • DS didn't poop for a couple days after he was born and we did some bicycling of his legs to try to get things moving... also we've discovered DS won't poop lying down so we have him sort of propped up or in the bouncy seat (we call it his poop chair). The nurse came to the house to check his bili levels and she used the rectal thermometer to stimulate him to poop... he felt so much better afterwards but it was definitely messy. I hope LO feels better soon!

  • Inserting a rectal thermometer may help. Move it in a figure 8 and be prepared for an immediate poop-losion. They also have gylcerin suppositories you can buy at Walgreens. Messy, but they do work!

We had to give DS prune juice mixed with formula for a few months. Once a day kept him from getting constipated.
