June 2012 Moms

baby detergent

I'm getting ready to wash all the new articles of clothing that I bought for LO...I'm  a FTM so wasn't sure what kind of detergent to use...For all of you second time moms, what do you use to launder baby's clothes?

Re: baby detergent

  • We use All Free & Clear. Anything that is unscented and dye free is fine. Dreft is overpriced and unnecessary.

  • Yep, since before DS was born we started using free & clear and haven't stopped!! We will continue to use it with this baby too!  We usually buy whichever one is on sale!

  • Oh but I will say the Dreft Stain Treater (in a spray bottle) is AMAZING. A friend gave it to me when I had DS, and the stains it took out shocked me!!

  • Oxyclean works really good for stains, too. Steal all those basins from L&D that you can to soak LO's clothes!!
  • We use the Costco brand free & clear stuff. DS has sensitive skin so as long as its dye free, fragrance free and everything else free, we're good.

  • any of the free and clears.  I use purex free and clear.
  • Aww but Dreft smells so good....

Quick question - Is there a reason you're washing clothes so early?  I thought about it but then thought that they'd be sitting around for 4 mths collecting dust so I decided to wait.  Just curious if it mattered....

I'm just getting all the things to do together now that I still have energy....I'm usually a procrastinator so, I just wanted to know what I'm doing and not wait until the last minute...I'll probably start washing his stuff late May since I'm due in June.

  • Do they still make Ivory Snow Baby Detergent?  I have looked at one store so far... that's what my mom used for my brother and I and I remembered loving how it smelled.   Anyone else use it or know if they even still make it?

  • I'm a FTM too, and have read it's best to use products free of dyes and perfumes so that nothing can cause an allergic reaction or aggitate baby's skin.

I used Tide's cold water - dye and perfume free HE detergent

  • I bought Dreft for a good price at Sam's Club. I am not washing the outfits just yet because we will move on April 15th.

    It smells like baby hummmmm!

  • All Free & Clear!    DH has pretty sensitive skin, and as for me?  Let's put it this way.  We got desperate and used "other" detergent while on our honeymoon, and it took me two weeks of steroids to get the hives to go away.

I'm just assuming our kid's going to have sensitive skin now... buying scent-free aveeno and sensitive skin diapers & wipes just to be on the safe side.  Don't want DD to go through what we did.

Wow...I totally forgot about Ivory Snow. My mother used that for us when I was a baby as well. I haven't seen it in awhile...Hmmm? I wonder...

Aveeno has chemicals in it that can cause reactions...and even "sensitive" diapers and wipes can. We chose to go with cloth, and make our own detergent (which is super simple and cheap) rather than risk a reaction.  I have lupus, and my skin is like yours- super sensitive to anything it comes in contact with. When I was in l&d a couple weeks ago, my face just touched the hospital pillow for a little bit, and I had a red welt on my skin for over 24 hours.

I originally was a little unsure about the cloth diaper process, but the more I learn about it, the happier I am we chose it. DH is even on board- as long as we use aios or pockets!

Right now, we use method free and clear laundry soap, and it is about the only thing I can stand. But, I've recently been reading about making your own and it is so much more cost effective- and you decide what goes in it so you limit reactions.

Also, I bought the huggies pure and natural diapers for a friend's shower, and her baby had a reaction. I've heard this from several people, so if you do stick with disposables, that is one you may want to avoid.
