recyclables

I just have a question for you ladies. What kind of organizational method do you have for your plastic/glass/aluminum&cans + cardboard that you would recommend? Right now, we have one of those 3-divided laundry organizers for the recycled materials (minus the cardboard), but I am looking to get a better system as they fill up easy...or maybe we don't take them in often enough.

But anyway... I am kind of new to this whole thing. Any help is much appreciated & TIA.

Re: recyclables

  • We have curbside pickup of mixed recycling, so we have two trash cans -- one for trash, one for mixed recycling; they match and are next to each other in the kitchen.  Glass is in a separate bin under the sink (and isn't picked up; we have to take it in).  I'm not sure that's helpful, though...

  • Since my city doesn't recycle we have to bring everything to a recycling dumpster that are in stores' parking lots, they take pretty much everything and anything so i have just one big container for everything and a paper bag for mail, newspapers and such.
  • I have four storage bins/ small hamper that stack together and line up on the floor of my pantry. One for glass, metal, plastic, and paper. I take the plastic and paper bins about once/ week, the glass about once a month, and the metal whenever it's full, which is rare, since we don't each much in the way of canned foods or drink sodas. I like my system since it matches my center's organizational system. When I go, I can just dump my bin into theirs and not have to sort anything other that separating my colored glass.

  • I have a plastic tote in the pantry that all of our recyclables go into.  When that gets full, I take it downstairs and sort them into similar totes in the garage.  We don't want to pay the high price for curbside pickup, so we take the recyclables to drop off at the recycle center once every couple of months.
