Why Church on Wednesday nights?

I'm just curious.  Ever since I moved down here, I notice that Wednesday nights is Church night and sometimes even Bible Study.   Is there a significance to that day of the week?  Is the service different on Wednesdays than it is on Sundays?

I am Ro.man Cat.holic and I grew up with Church on Sundays (or Saturday evenings) and it was 1 hour only and that was it.   There were Daily Masses in the mornings or afternoons, but nothing at night and we were only required to go on Sundays.

Re: Why Church on Wednesday nights?

  • I didn't know about it until I moved to the South either.  I've not heard that the actual day has any significance; I figured it was because Wednesday evening is halfway between Sunday mornings but I really don't know. :)  It's definitely tradition here though.  And it's convenient with scheduling things -- when I worked in the school system we didn't schedule any Wednesday evening events since we knew that regardless of which church people went to they'd likely be busy on Wednesdays.  My understanding is that it's a bit more of a family atmosphere with dinner and activities, but that's just what I've picked up (since most Southern SaIFers are probably in bed right now where we should be!).

  • I suppose Wednesday nights because it is midweek and a good time to check in on your faith.

Growing up, I remember we had no homework on Wednesday nights.

Wednesday was always, and still is in my church, a night for choir, confirmation classes, things like that. We have a Wednesday night church service which serves as a child friendly alternative for people who don't feel as comfortable with kids there for the more formal Sundays, and is a good alternative for those that work Sundays. In addition, the evening time allows a different feel to the service which can make your experience different, and help you focus on different areas of your faith.

  • I grew up Catholic as well and my grandma always went to church on Wednesdays here in MA as well as either Saturday night or Sunday...I really have no clue as to why or how it was different.

  • I am Lut.heran and we only have Wednesday services during lent.  Our church does a potluck dinner sponsored by one of the ministries and then service is to follow.

  • To be honest, a week without worship is too long for a lot of people, me especially.  I need it to stay on the right path mentally.  I love Wednesday night church.  Very casual, lots of great fellowship and worship.

We have supper at church every Wednesday night...which is nice too.

  • Baptists have Wednesday night church but I never knew churches to have an actual service on Wednesdays.  It was always when you had choir, children's choir, youth meetings, etc.  My churches always had Wednesday night dinner you could come to.  It was more about the fellowship and I loved Wednesday nights as a kid and youth.  We don't do on Wednesday nights now but probably will when our kids are old enough for these activities.  No special significance for Wednesday as far as I know other than middle of the week.
