I really can't imagine what could happen that minute with a baby strapped in a carseat.
Did anyone ever see that GMA a few months ago about the young couple who fought off a carjacking while their baby was in the backseat? I'm probably not remembering all the details correctly but I think this is what happened.
A young couple left their daughter asleep in her car seat at a rest stop at like two in the morning. They got out of the vehicle and locked the doors and then stepped to the passenger side of the vehicle to speak to the wife's parents who were driving with them in a moving van. They were within two feet of the car at all times and the car was locked.
A man snuck over to the driver's side door, broke the window and took off with the car in about 5-10 seconds. Luckily the mother was able to run along side the car and break out the passenger window and her husband was able to get into the car and stop the guy.
I know it seems unlikely but these things can happen faster than you would believe.
I just can't imagine taking the risk.
But couldn't that happen while you were loading the groceries? I mean, if someone was lurking, waiting to steal my car or children, I feel like the prime time to do it would be while I was loading the groceries or putting the babies in the car.
Okay alipie02, spill it. WTF do you live?? lol Good God woman, I seriously would have moved by now if it was that bad where I am. I can't imagine dealing with that withOUT a LO.
Lol, I live up in the high desert mountains in southern Wyoming. We have some of the worst wind in the country. An average day for us is usually about 25mph. We often hit hurricane force winds on perfectly sunny days where you would never believe that the weather could be bad.
I no it sounds like I'm exagerating all this but i swear I'm not. The weather here is absolutely horrible. We start getting snow usually mid-September, but occasionally get snow in Aug. The snow usually ends by the end of May but often we get surprise blizzards all they way through June.
It sucks, never would have imagined I would see a fourth of july fireworks show cancelled due to blizzard.
Also I'm sorry about my horrible typing, LO spilled ginger ale on my computer awhile back. It's now hard to capitalize and space properly. The spelling is all on me, i suck at spelling.
I strongly agree with you! I also thought it was illegal to leave your baby unattended in a car even for a few seconds. Let alone a freezing cold one! That is just messed up and we have about the same weather you do where ever you are from. I was a cart pusher once in college and that is what their jobs is for to put carts in the right place when people like us are unable too. So whoever is against that think of it as it creates another job!
what a BS comment...their job is not to chase carts around the lot, its to take the carts from the corral and bring them back into the store. Just because lazy people don't put them in the corral it doesn't create an extra job. The original person they hired has to take care of it. Give me a break.
Do you guys not have weather forecasts on the internet?? Can you not see when bad weather is coming? If I knew weather was going to be bad I would stock up on supplies.
If you can't rely on DH being home on a regular basis, how about asking him to pick up some food on his way home from work?
LIKE I SAID I WAS A CART CHASER! that is what I got paid for and I gladly did it because I signed up for it. Besides that my DH isn't always able to be their to help me when he is we put our cart away. I am not taking my child out in freezing weather while I put the cart away and I am not leaving my child in a freezing car alone either. Also year round bad weather happens here and guess what! You can have fours season in a day weatherman isn't always right. Sunny one minute and blizzarding the next. How is that a "BS" comment?? Have you lived in an area like that with a baby? If not you really have no room to speak. I wounldn't live here if I didn't have to. This is where my job is this is where I have to be.
Oh man I know exactly what you mean. Those days when you go from heater to air conditioner back to heater. Aaahhh, weather is stupid sometimes.
Also wanted to add that I live at an elevation of over 7000ft. This causes a lot of sudden weather that forecasts do not have time to report on.
I try to always take the cart back, mostly because I recognize that if I leave it there it might be in the way of the next person who wants to park in my spot.
I will add though that when DH was younger he worked for a grocery store and was often in charge of gathering up the carts in the parking lot. Oddly enough he actually didn't mind having to go all over the parking lot to gather the carts people didn't take back. He said it gave him something to do so he wasn't bored and in the summer was a nice break because he got to spend more time outside.
I try to park next to a cart return, but if I can't and it's bad weather, I will not leave DD alone in the car while I go return a cart, just not worth it in my opinion. They spots around the cart return should be reserved for mommys.
I totally hate it when people don't put there carts away! Even now with DD, I just put her in first, lock the doors and then put it in cart return. I always manage to find a spot either right next to it or a few spots away.
People got really heated up on this subject. It's so funny to me because EVERYONE in my area does this. Maybe it's just because people from NJ are jerks. But at all the grocery stores I go to, they have at least 2-3 employees in the parking lot gathering carts at all times. Everytime I take LO with me, I try to park near the cart corall so that I can return the cart. But if I can't, I leave my cart up on the curb. Flame away if you want, but I'm just not comfortable leaving him in the car by himself. I don't feel a bit bad about it because I'd say 75% of the other people leave them as well. Once the weather gets warmer, I'll leave him in the cart with me and walk him to the corall. It's funny because this one same employee always comes up to me to help offer to put my groceries in my car. We're on a first name basis and he takes my cart after he asks me a million and one questions about LO.

If everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you too? Sorry, I had to. ;o)

Eh, I'm going to claim this is a "cultural" thing not a jumping off bridge thing ) No one sees it as a big deal here.. I dunno. As crazy as it sounds to some of you! LOL In my town it's only rude if you put it somewhere it could roll into a car.
In cases like this, I wish America would adopt some of Europe's simple but genius habits. At stores there, including Walmart you must purchase the basket/cart to use it. It usually costs 1 Euro and when you return it, you get your money back. You NEVER saw baskets scattered across the parking lot.
I'm not trying to flame anyone here, but I too can't stand it when I see people leave the basket between parked cars. It's annoying, the people who do it are lazy, & they also don't care or give a damn about other peoples property!! I have twins and I put them in the car, deal with their stroller, put up the groceries, & then go put the basket up EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. It's not that hard people!!
Also, I'm sure that not every store offers this, but in my area they have about 4 slots for "Mommy Parking." I try to take advantage of these spaces, but if they aren't available, I just park elsewhere. It might be a good idea to bring it up to the store/company to incorporate something to make it a bit easier.

And in that story, wasn't the car running?

HOLY ***! This post is so freaking long. I have up reading all the replies.
To sum it up. I always put the buggy back. I also always say buggy and I get picked on terribly for it.
