I agree with a previous post, circumcision, breastfeeding and diapering are personal choices, I have my opinions and you all have yours and no one is going to change anyone else's mind. So long as everyone is changing their babies diapers and feeding them....
UO/vent: I hate when people assume the sex of an infant or toddler (unless it is super obvious) My almost 2 year old has short hair (never been cut, just grows slow) and wears jeans and sneakers to the park. Please do not call her him. It makes me sad.
I think it is rude when people comment on the size of one's bump. IMO telling a pregnant women they look smaller or bigger than they are generally is not appreciated.
Alright...since we've hopped on the political train today - I figure I'll say my piece. My opinion is that I am SICK TO DEATH that the candidates have decided the "hot button" issues should be topics issues such as abortion (which Santorum seems to be turning into a religious crusade against women), rights to contraception (who says what I can do with my body?...I freakin' love the women in GA who are stating that if abortion becomes illegal, they want vasectomies to be so too...take that!), and gay marriage (for goodness sake, if two people love each other...it's between them!...let them marry, for Pete's Sake!).
Honest to God, I would be THRILLED if some of these candidates would start talking about issues like the rising (with no end in sight) GAS PRICES...my goodness, we're at almost $5.00/gallon and NO ONE seems to care. Must be because they're making so much money devising a plan to take away (or keep away) rights, that they don't care about the little people trying to figure out how to get to work every day. I'm so pissed and sick to death of hearing about how politicians want to take away rights (especially of women, you know, us second class citizens...growl), but in the same breath want to cut funding for social programs.
Ignorant as it may seem, I am running away from the news outlets, sticking my fingers in my ears, and humming the Pledge of Allegiance (which, by the way, says Liberty UNDER GOD...not Jesus, or Allah, Yep...GOD) until they start addressing issues that really matter. And if you don't want to say God, just don't say it. I don't care.
...Now I need a candy bar. Hmph.
Amen! And I agree that the things that candidates are fighting about are crazy. It would be wonderful if people focused on making the lives of everyone better, not just pushing agendas that only relate to specific things. I know far to many people who vote Republican because they don't agree with abortion but don't look into anything else that is going on.
I find it beyond insulting that illegal Mexican immigrants can float their way on over to our country, suck the free healthcare out of us, and still refuse to learn the language. As a nurse, it is incredibly difficult to communicate with a mother about her sick baby when all she does is stare at me like I'm from another planet. Listen, lady, I'm here at 3 AM to provide a better life for MY child... the least you can do is learn a few words so that you can understand how I am caring for yours, especially since I am the one currently paying for their stay here in the NICU!!!
Snark Intended because this really irritates me:
YOU could put in a little effort to learn THEIR language you know? The states don't have an official language, and it's not that heard to learn some conversational tools to help you in your job. It's incredibly awful of you to just expect them to learn english as soon as they get here, along with dealing with all the major changes they're going through in their lives. I've personally picked up and moved to another country and it is terrifying, and having people who are @ssholes about me not speaking their language perfectly only made things harder. (I lived in France. I had already been studying the language for 5 years, but the french are really uptight about your accent, so I ran into a lot of rude people like YOU, who treated me like I was a terrible person because I didn't speak the language like they did)
I also want to add that English is one of the most complicated languages to learn because there is NO pattern or form to the language. Its literally a melting pot of 5-10 other languages, and we just steal words from other languages and adopt them into the culture and expect people to know them.
Your tax dollars don't JUST go to paying for immigrants health care either. Do you also get angry when you have an elderly patient or a veteran who's on social security? You need to get your head out of your @ss and open your eyes a little.
They chose to come to America so they should be ready to deal with any changes. While we don't have an official language, it is pretty universal that we speak English here in America. If you want to come to America, learn some English. We shouldn't have to adapt to you when we've been here speaking English all along.
And thats ok if you don't want to adapt. but if you're not going to put any effort forth to communicate with them, don't b!tch and moan when you can't!
No b!tching and moaning here because I don't ever have to deal with spanish speaking people. I work with the government/military and we all speak English. But I just can't imagine going to a country that doesn't have an official language but where the MAJORITY speaks a certain language and not try to learn it. I wouldn't expect them to learn my language...seems backwards.
I also want to add that I took 5 years of Spanish in school and am currently trying to learn Italian just for fun because I do agree that we should open our minds to other cultures. I want to go to Italy and speak Italian, not English.
I agree with a previous poster that Americans do have the tendancy to be arrogant when visiting other countries and expect people to speak English. However, in America, even though we have no official language, I do think we have the right to expect people to know at least some English. Immigration is NOTHING new. It's what this country was founded on. And for the past few hundred years those immigrants have been learning English. What has changed in the past few decades, that we no longer expect this? I feel like not expecting this is diluting our American heritage in some way.
My UO:
-Cursing on message boards is tacky and low class. Sorry, guess it's the teacher in me.

Whoa! Tacky and low class may be a little harsh. I am a teacher too and I am trying to give up bad language for lent.

Why should she have to? especially if she does not live in an area like San Diego, Miami, or South Texas?
Do you really think San Diego, Miami, and South Texas are the only areas with spanish speakers? I live in TN and there are a TON of spanish speakers in my area. It would be useful to know conversational spanish no matter where you are in the states.
I just want to agree with Alicia on other areas of the country having Spanish speakers. You'd be surprised how many people in the Massachusetts area speak Spanish. It would definitely come in handy for me sometimes!
But, I'm kind of on the fence about this. On the one hand, we don't have an official language, so we can't get that pissed about it. But, when I studied abroad, I tried to know at least a few conversational basics in French, Italian, etc... so that I wasn't just assuming everyone would understand my English.
I think Americans can be pretty arrogant when it comes to expecting others to accommodate our own language shortcomings. But it works both ways. I think English and Spanish speakers need to try a little harder to understand each other. We don't live in bubbles.
Here's my two cents on the matter:
1- I live in NYC if I tried to learn the languages of the many populations that make up this city it could and would take a lifetime- its actually one of my favorite things about the city. That being said the population I work with are largely Dominican, Puerto Rican and Mexican and I do not speak a word of Spanish. Would it be easier on me if the parents learned English? Of course. Will they? Probably not. I am however planning to learn Spanish this summer to make my life easier. I also think its good to know other languages
2- On the flip side: I think it behooves immigrants to learn the main language of the country they are moving to (regardless if it is official or not). I am first generation American. My father came to this country from Italy when he was 17 and did everything he could to learn English as fast as he could, as did the rest of his family. It will open up job opportunities and make life easier. We encourage our children to be bilingual and learn Spanish. It couldn't hurt them to learn English.
Baby, I’ll say “remember your mama is a worrier but your papa is a warrior & you are the child with small hands & big eyes who never stops asking for more.”~ Sarah Kay

Sorry, not trying to be harsh. Its hard to give up cursing. We are adults and enjoy free speech, but I just can't stand it. It's hard for me to stand up and tell my students to clean up their language and for me to turn around and use it in my life (whether on message boards or conversations).
I can't stand entitlement. No one owes me anything, I work 50 hours weekly and I earn a paycheck. I can't stand kids that feel that they walk on water and the teachers are out to get them. I dislike social programs - these lead to entitlement. I believe in being charitable to those that are working hard to get out of their poor situation. I am paying into my 401k and assuming no social security when I am older, I don't expect the government to take care of me from cradle to grave. I expect me to take care of me.
Does anyone realize that in so many countries education isn't a right but instead a privilege, I'm not a teacher but I sure as heck support the public school system.

Nah, it's not the teacher in you. That's something else entirely...I won't say what because I don't want to be tacky and low class.
Also, to the above poster that says she dislikes social programs, let's see how much you dislike them if you happen to lose your job or become disabled and your kids (or you) need food or medical care. Sometimes it pays to look beyond the end of your nose.
- I judge people that rehome a pet, when they are perfectly able to take care of the animal, but just don't want to. If you are financially or physically unable to, that is a different story.
-We live in a nation of immigrants. That will never change. People should just deal with it. All of the whining, complaining, and rudeness won't make anybody learn English. If you would like to live in a homogenous country, you should live somewhere else than the United States.
-Don't say that you support one politician's financial policies but not their social ones. If you vote someone in office that OPENLY discriminates against women and homosexuals, you are contributing to the problem. In my opinion, I don't care how sound someone's foreign or financial policy stance is, if they want to interfere with any woman's reproductive rights they should not even be running. Abortion issues have been settled time and time again, why are they still rehashing it?
-I have never had to draw unemployment, I don't have illegal immigrants in my family but I'm surrounded by them here in South Texas, I've never had to have an abortion, never had to go on assistance or food stamps, and I have NO PROBLEM paying for all of these things with my hard-earned money so other people can do so. I guess I am just a bleeding heart liberal and I am fine with that.
WHEW! Somebody hit AliciaS's hot button today with their post...
Here's the thing, sis... I'm sick and tired of working my buns off on nights, weekends, and holidays to prepare for and provide for this baby while others find it perfectly okay to sit around and procreate their society-sucking kids. I understand that America doesn't have a national language, it was never my claim that English is the official language of America. But how many professionals do YOU know that are non-English speaking?? My guess is a big, fat, zero. Fact of the matter is that people who live here, work here, and contribute here speak English. This is not any form of entitlement that I feel, nor is it a feeling of superiority... it's just the way it is. Take it up with Columbus.
You mentioned going to France and attempting to learn their language: good for you. I have been to France as well, and know that they truly do appreciate the effort. That's not my argument here... my argument is that it is completely inappropriate to not even ATTEMPT to speak with the person who is caring for your sick infant!! Are you kidding??? You can bet your last dollar (earned, not given) that if my baby was in a NICU in Korea, Italy, or some tongue-clicking tribe in Africa, I would be learning how to communicate!!!
Instead these morons are "earning" money (up to $3,000/month) for visiting their baby in the NICU, while simultaneously NOT paying for their medical bills, contributing to society, or making an effort. Without having a job to go to during the day (or night, like some of us), I feel that there is PLENTY of time to take that $3,000 a month you're earning for being in a NICU for 20 hours a week, head on over to the local library (where membership is free), check out a book, and get to learnin'. Lord knows they don't have anything else to pay for!!
Really NOT trying to offend here, but this is my UO. This is what I deal with for 40 hours a week, and this is what has made me resentful towards those who infect our society and drain it of it's resources. You have requested that I pull my head out... and I think it's high time you do the same.
ETA: Need to mention that I don't expect everyone to be homogenous here. I understand that is a pipe dream. But don't you dare sit there and collect the free healthcare, housing, food, gas, and clothing that the rest of us are working hard for, and then ask me "what else you can have for free". That ain't ever going to go over well.

Does this include a cat that pees on everything who won't go in the litter box? We had her for almost 6 months & there was no changing her ways.
& I definitely wasn't going to let her pee everywhere & all over my baby's things.

I'm not really going to get in on this, but I think there's a chance you took this out of context. Also, it sounds like you don't really have compassion for these people at all. Considering you are a nurse...that's more than a little scary.
The fact that anyone can look at Rick Santorum as a "serious" candidate for the title of human being makes me go "huh??" The fact that a large number of people consider him a good fit to run our country makes me lose faith in humanity more than a little.
I watch Rachel Maddow. She made a very good point last night. None of the Democrats want to pick on him, or point out his flaws. Because he would be a much easier candidate over Romney.
so, shhhhhhhhh. Wait till general election time.
lol not sure if anyone will get this but this election will be like giant douche vs turd sandwich. no good on eother side

I'm confused at the characterization of illegal immigrants as lazy. That's not my impression at all. It's more like they work their asses off at menial jobs for well below minimum wage in order to try to make a better life for their families. They can't get jobs the traditional way. You really think they're raking in the riches? Know many illegal immigrants "stealing" jobs as CEOs and Attorneys? And is it really "mooching" off of us that we provide health care to their babies, in lieu of letting them die?
Maybe some have baser intentions, but so do many of our natural born citizens. I think this group has been very unfairly scape-goated.
I can't get the ticker to work, but I have two sons:
I agree with a previous poster that Americans do have the tendancy to be arrogant when visiting other countries and expect people to speak English. I think you have the tendency to read one line without reading everything. I am beginning to notice this as a trend with you my dear.
I dislike social programs, the following line I said that I believe in supporting those that are working to better themselves. I have been to foreign countries on missions work and helped families that truly had nothing. I have seen children with their legs broken at birth intentionally so that they can go out and beg. Here's the rub, I do not believe in people collecting unemployment for 23 months and then getting their rears in gear to find a job before their unemployment runs out. Where in the bill of rights does it say that I have to pay for social security or the like. As Thomas Jefferson said . . . The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. The key word is "willing."
Why should my tax dollars be spent on signs along the highway saying shovel ready? Get the work done and stop spending money on frivolous signs.

Do you feel the same way about your other patients who are on welfare but are white and speak english?
How do you know they don't work, don't contribute to society or make an effort? Do you follow them home after work? Who do you think picks your strawberries and other produce? Who mows most of the lawns in your neighborhood?
The US population is over 300 million....it is estimated by the government that around 12 million are here illegally. I am pretty sure that there are more than 12 million people who do not pay their hospital bills and get welfare.
That being said....I do not care if my tax dollars provide for ANY baby or child who needs healthcare, an education, food in their belly....I hope my tax dollars go to help those who are in poverty instead of questionable wars that cost many times more than we spend on social programs that help the poor.

While I agree that English is not the official language, it is common sense that it's the language most widely used. I too have traveled and make an effort to speak the native language. I dont expect anyone to cater to me. If my baby is sick, you better damn well believe I will have my translation dictionary out to make an effort to communicate properly. I don't care if my accent sucks, I still try.
Veterans and elderly pay into the system. They WORK for it. Totally different than those who abuse the system. I work in healthcare billing and see examples of this daily. Immigrants will get total write offs on the bills, but someone who pays 1000's in healthcare premiums are not given a break when insurance does not cover in full. My heart broke for a father whose child has leukemia, and can not afford the medical bills AFTER insurance has paid. He applied for state aid to supplement his private insurance and was denied coverage. They are now losing their home. Tell me how that's fair? I was on state medical aid for three months, but as soon as I was back on my own two feet, I dropped the coverage. I used the assistance for what it's intended for and that was it. I can completely sympathize with the original posters comment. It's extremely frustrating dealing with people's health, well being and lives when little effort is made on the patients behalf. And our welfare system straight up sucks.

Sorry but I'm 100% in agreement with this. I'm not going to another country and expect them to know my language just because there are so many people who speak it there. Is there a lot of English is other countries, yes, but if I move there I'm at least attempting to learn their language.
I'm not going to touch the cost of illegal immigration on the working class or the ridiculous comparison between that and social security. They work to pay into it, not just show up and collect.

I think you have the tendency to read one line without reading everything. I am beginning to notice this as a trend with you my dear.
I just wanted to say that the part of your post that I left above is the only part I read...because I am just that ignorant.
::eyeroll::
I think you have a tendency to make assumptions...dear.
What you said was that you don't like social programs because they lead to entitlement. Maybe for some, but not for all (I'd wager by far). Just in case you've never been on welfare or foodstamps or had to carry WIC vouchers around in a grocery store...I assure you it does not lead to a sense of entitlement. It leads to humiliation and embarrassment. I speak from personal experience.
You did also say that you believe in charity. That's nice, but I see charity as something different than social welfare programs. I guess maybe we miscommunicated on that because we just have different definitions of the two.
See...I can (and DO) read everything...and even better...I comprehend what I read.
P.S. I did collect unemployment for 23 months and didn't find a job. I tried for a long time, failed and then decided to focus my attentions on going back to school. I almost finished before my UE ran out. I feel that I was justified in doing that because I was working to better myself. Some would probably disagree, but that's ok with me. I did what was best for my situation.
Take it up with Columbus
I'm not touching the "tongue clicking" but just because I'm starting to think you have some pretty deep seated issues, I'll say that Columbus spoke Spanish too. And Italian. No English there.
All the media attention over Jeremy Lin is annoying. Yeah he is a great player who happens to be of Asian decent. So what? Things aren't always about race.
The circumscion debate is another one like CD or BF. People will choose their on way with their boys. Making the decision as a parent isn't wrong or bad simply because the baby has "no choice". He won't get many choices in life until he is older. Do it, don't do it...whatever. It's a personal decision you make for your child and you aren't mutilating your child for doing it or setting them up for problems if you don't.
Besides the ESPN reference on Jeremy Lin, the original point of his media attention ISN'T because he's asian. It's because he has been passed over/cut by multiple pro teams, undrafted from Harvard and when he has finally had the opportunity to play, he sets triple-double type performance. He's only played consistenly since early Feb and virtually came out of nowhere. No Asian, Black, While, Whatever player has done what he has done in a short period of time just coming off of reserve/bench. And, he doesn't have some shady background and is an overall decent role model. That's what all the media attention is about.

Re: UO
First, not an UO: I love the bump!
No political opinions from me today.
Amen! And I agree that the things that candidates are fighting about are crazy. It would be wonderful if people focused on making the lives of everyone better, not just pushing agendas that only relate to specific things. I know far to many people who vote Republican because they don't agree with abortion but don't look into anything else that is going on.
-Cursing on message boards is tacky and low class. Sorry, guess it's the teacher in me.
Whoa! Tacky and low class may be a little harsh. I am a teacher too and I am trying to give up bad language for lent.
Sorry, not trying to be harsh.
Its hard to give up cursing. We are adults and enjoy free speech, but I just can't stand it. It's hard for me to stand up and tell my students to clean up their language and for me to turn around and use it in my life (whether on message boards or conversations).
Here is my uo:
Wow!!! Everyone is opinionated today, I love it!

Southpark!!!
PREACH!!!!
I did grow up on welfare and because I was able to have dinner every night, see a dr when I was sick, etc...I was able to focus on school and become the 1st in my family to go to college and then grad school. I hope my tax dollars can help someone else achieve their dreams too.
