Pump Room WAR- long rant

Since I'm planning on quitting this summer anyway, I've decided to start a war over the pump room with management. Disclaimer, I'm part of management, I'm warring with the rest of them.

We're a large law firm, hundreds of people in our building, and we have one single seater pump room. Which was fine until recently-- right now there are 5 of us, trying to pump 30 min each 3 times a day.... do the math. It's been ugly.

We got together a list of requests, and since I work in facilities/maintenance management, I sent it to my group. Almost everything was denied, except buying us a new, bigger fridge.... which was the only request that cost money... odd. They even denied putting in a clock?!

Our biggest issue is that there is a security keycard access pad for the room, but it's disconnected. We have to go to a nearby security desk and ask to be let in. Half the time the guards aren't paying attention-- you have to yell to make yourself heard, and it's right next to a department that works in an open space, so everyone can see/hear you. The reason given was "they want to know who is in there"- except a keycard access would tell you EXACTLY who is in there, and there is no way half those guards know my name.

Here's the problem. Since my department denied these, the next step is for some of the other girls to go to HR and AD.... and the managers of those departments happen to be enemies of my manager... she's going to be PISSED. And since I sent the first email-- it will take 2 seconds for her to realize I'm part of it.

I have a feeling this is going to blow up big time, and I'm not sure I care!

Am I playing with fire here? or fighting the good fight?

  • Fight the good fight! I am appalled by how little support many companies give to pumpers. Even if you will be leaving your job, the ladies who stay behind will thank you.

  • You are playing with fire by fighting the good fight. I wish I could support you more than electronically. But in that way, I've got your back.

On a side note, I think it is sad that women are fighting for pumping rights in a situation that makes it almost impossible to enjoy an extended (6+ months) maternity/paternity leave. Pumping right are the very least of what should be in place!

  • You're fighting the good fight.  I gave up my fight about the pumping room, as I'm not pumping anymore.  However, I informed our HR (they are in CT, my office is in MA) that we currently have 3 (that I know of) pregnant women in the office, so this issue isn't going to become dead.

I gave these girls a heads up, but I still feel bad for them.

    Yes Exactly

  • Fight the good fight. Obviously, you don't want to make any mortal enemies, but tell your boss that you would like to have the items reconsidered and that you plan on going to HR and AD if you can't come to a reasonable agreement.

My office has 3-4 pumping moms and any given time and we have 2 pump rooms (though they can technically be used by anyone for 10 minutes), 1 of the moms has a private office and we have 3 optional pump sites for emergency situations. 1 room for 5 woman is ridiculous.

Go out with your guns blazing!

Ditto this! As an EPer, pumping at work sucked hard! I'm a sub teacher and I would have to pump in the nurse's office bathroom!!! Talk about disgusting!  That's another reason why I didn't want to pump.
