The fact that anyone can look at Rick Santorum as a "serious" candidate for the title of human being makes me go "huh??" The fact that a large number of people consider him a good fit to run our country makes me lose faith in humanity more than a little.
I watch Rachel Maddow. She made a very good point last night. None of the Democrats want to pick on him, or point out his flaws. Because he would be a much easier candidate over Romney.
so, shhhhhhhhh. Wait till general election time.
Such a good point, but do you really trust the public NOT to vote his ass in? (You guys re-elected Bush... I know you personally didn't, but I lost a lot of my faith in the American public that day...) It makes me nervous!
I most definitely did NOT re-elect Bush. I can't believe he won that election. Country full of idiots.
I find it humorous that this board is full of posts today pointing out the flaws in our systems when it comes to social assistance and the insane amount of taxes we pay for some of those programs (that are being horribly abused), but are gung-ho on voting for a President that has/will increase our country's debt more in 8 years than anyone else has in the last 200 years! I'm am not saying the Rep candidates are exactly a dream team, but I find the economy (including taxes, our national debt, etc) FAR outweighs any other issue at the moment, including social ones where I am actually fairly liberal.
I was really double thinking about posting this, but I am SO tired of the fact that you can't say ANYTHING bad about Obama. It was perfectly okay to wish actual death upon our last president, which is something I would never do to any of our presidents.

I could never figure that out!! You make fun of him all the time then you re-elected him?!
I know Showers are a gift, and I am truly thankful that my mother is throwing me one, however I do not feel bad about asking my SIL to call my mom and dissuade her from having a Rubber Ducky theme. I'm sure there are ways it could be done in a non-tacky way, but I know my mother and I know that it would be embarrassing.
I understand that I have had a really easy pregnancy and very little in my life has changed thus far, but I am still pregnant and would appreciate it if people at work were not so damn insensitive about it.There are certain things I should not be doing anymore and I am going to start playing the PG card and refusing to do them if that is what it takes. These tasks do not require my skills or my authority and there are plenty of other bodies that can easily accomplish the task. Not wanting to do them isn't a good enough reason to ask me to do it.

Because John Kerry was an absolutely HORRIBLE candidate. Seriously. He is the only reason Bush won.
Dudes, the hus and I went on a babymoon and it was super fun. It was so nice to have some time to get away, just the two of us, to talk about all the things ahead. I understand that it is an unnecessary expense, but if it is within your means, I see no problem with it.
My UO: Baby showers. Maybe I'm a giant spoiled brat, but I just don't want one and I would like people to stop judging me for it.
UO2: Baby names. Everyone and their mother is pressuring me to reveal and then making sh*tty comments about names. Shut up already!!!

On the TV subject - we don't currently have a TV. We watch all the shows we want online and that works for us. Because our 'tv' is also our computer I feel like we can better control what is being watched, and when. It also helps DH and I limit our screen time as we both know that this is a case where we need to lead by example.
I think it would be wonderful to have family movie nights and have that bonding time.
Growing up we watched one show a week as a family, and we were allowed 1hr of cartoons on Saturday morning. That was it. And it was awesome. And that will likely be how it is for this (and any future) LO.

I know hun! Didn't like.... 50.0001% of the country re-elect him? This is one of those arguments that no one will ever win. From where I stand, Republicans and Democrats may as well be two different species, for how apart they are on ALL the issues. There is no middle ground in American politics! I try not to bother arguing the merits either way, its just too exhausting...
I think it is mind blowingly ridiculous that some schools require students to invite ALL of their classmates to their birthday party. The reasoning is that it is far too hurtful to the snowflakes who are not invited.
Seriously - parents need to get a grip and use this as a moment to teach their children about disappointment, friendship, expectations, etc - there are so many great lessons here!
I agree about the opportunity for lessons. The problem is that 5 year olds don't really understand. My son goes to a school where this is the rule, but recently there was a parent that disobeyed and the kids talk about the party in class. I explained that some people just can't invite so many people, but it still hurt his feelings. Perhaps someday when it is your 5 year old with hurt feelings, you might change your mind. I know life is not fair, but there are plenty of opportunities to learn that lesson when children are older and better able to understand.

- I do not understand anyones logic as to how its okay to throw your own baby shower. Whether it be for the 1st, the 3rd, the first boy, the first girl .. whatever. If you call it a baby shower, it is implied that you will expect gifts for that child, and that is tacky. If you would like to throw a get together with those that you are close to and call it something else, go for it. If you would like to throw a "meet the baby" party after your LO gets here, go for it. But throwing your own baby shower is, IMO, nuts. It looks gift grabby and attention seeking. I know that some people won't have a baby shower with their 1st for whatever reason ... and I still don't know if I will be having one, and this is mine and DH's first LO. However, that does not mean that I'm going to go out and plan one for myself.
Someone is opinionated today:)
I agree, super tacky to throw your own baby shower. I got an invite on facebook the other day from an acquaintance for the baby shower she and her husband are throwing for themselves. She invited me and over 150 of her closest facebook friends In the invites it says that you are required to bring a box of diapers or you can't drink and the it also states that she has registered at Target and they ask that you not buy any clothes under size 3 months and nothing with monkeys on it. I actually laughed out loud when I read it, how much tackier can you get?! I will not be attending that one!

I was a fat, poor, unpopular child. I didn't get invited to a LOT of things. If I had gotten invited then that would've just been a chance for the other kids to ridicule and make fun of me on a 6th day of the week. NO THANKS!
5 year olds DO have the capacity to understand and no, I won't feel differently when it's my 5 year old having their feelings hurt. Of course, it will hurt me to see them upset, but they won't die from it. It's a part of life.
Cloth diapering is not "disgusting." & I'm sick of hearing from everyone & their mother that it is. It annoys me when people say they don't want to have to touch poop. Wtf do you think people w/ cloth do? We don't use a piece of cloth & a safety pin anymore. Even if we did- women did it for years before disposables were invented. Get the *** over yourself. You are not any better than I am just because you are putting plastic on your kids arse. & stop criticizing me for my choice. Because it is just that...MY choice.
I agree with all of this. It really helped my family get on my side when I actually took them some diapers to show them how they've changed. MIL was STILL insisting we wouldn't be able to do it though. ugh!
Frankly, I can't think of anything that would give me greater motivation to do something baby related than MIL saying I couldn't do it!

Serious: I'm tired of people saying Obama has run our country into massive amounts of debt. He (like every other President, Rebublican or Democrat, that preceded him) did not assume office with the country's debt at a zero balance. He is working with what he has been given, and a lot of programs that have been started are longer-term efforts that are going to seem debt-heavy in the short-term, because they need a much longer evaluation period to see if they actually helped the country financially or not. I feel like this is a short-sighted way to look at a very long-term issue, because it's not solely about the candidate who is currently in office. It's about who came before, what they did, who's there now, what they're doing, and who will be there next and what they will do. It's all inter-related, yet people jump on the anti-(whoever...currently Obama) bandwagon by saying it's that person's fault.
Semi-Serious: Anyone whose best anti-CD argument is that you will have to touch poop has either never been a parent or is delusional. We didn't CD, and poop gets on your hands here and there during the process. If this is a big deal to anyone, they should not be a parent. Poop is nothing.
Not at all Serious: I despise Glee and anything Broadway-ish

I agree. When I am speaking about politics I am very careful not to say I love Obama, because I don't. Personally I wish instead of just going with Obama we could have a democratic primary as well but that isn't going to happen. I have hoped and prayed for a candidate I could believe in from the republican side but there is just no one. A lot of their ideals scare the crap out of me as a women and as a human being in general.

Completely agree! Which is why I find the current health care bill absolutely ridiculous! I don't want the government in any of those types of decisions! Pretty much everything the government has touched (from every side of the aisle) has turned to absolute crap! For me, and my current life, I just know that focusing on gaining a more positive control on our economy is so far above and beyond what needs to be taken care of first, that I honestly just wish they would stop even talking about any matters regarding "social" issues...because, honestly, I don't care who is in as president, no US Supreme Court will ever overturn things like Roe vs. Wade, so I think it is just stupid that we even talk about it. And I am completely fine with letting STATES decide on many social issues, because it leaves the power up to the people (again, the people of TODAY'S society, not the society of the 50's).
I find it beyond insulting that illegal Mexican immigrants can float their way on over to our country, suck the free healthcare out of us, and still refuse to learn the language. As a nurse, it is incredibly difficult to communicate with a mother about her sick baby when all she does is stare at me like I'm from another planet. Listen, lady, I'm here at 3 AM to provide a better life for MY child... the least you can do is learn a few words so that you can understand how I am caring for yours, especially since I am the one currently paying for their stay here in the NICU!!!
Snark Intended because this really irritates me:
YOU could put in a little effort to learn THEIR language you know? The states don't have an official language, and it's not that heard to learn some conversational tools to help you in your job. It's incredibly awful of you to just expect them to learn english as soon as they get here, along with dealing with all the major changes they're going through in their lives. I've personally picked up and moved to another country and it is terrifying, and having people who are @ssholes about me not speaking their language perfectly only made things harder. (I lived in France. I had already been studying the language for 5 years, but the french are really uptight about your accent, so I ran into a lot of rude people like YOU, who treated me like I was a terrible person because I didn't speak the language like they did)
I also want to add that English is one of the most complicated languages to learn because there is NO pattern or form to the language. Its literally a melting pot of 5-10 other languages, and we just steal words from other languages and adopt them into the culture and expect people to know them.
Your tax dollars don't JUST go to paying for immigrants health care either. Do you also get angry when you have an elderly patient or a veteran who's on social security? You need to get your head out of your @ss and open your eyes a little.

Our kids today are total pansies.
I agree. Sometimes life isn't fair. Kids need to learn this at an early age. What is the point of trying to force them to socialize in situations they are clearly not welcome in?

And lets not forget that Bush inherited a SURPLUS from Clinton, and by the time he left office the debt was in the trillions.
I guess this is mostly in response to OP's claim that Obama has singlehandedly done more to increase the debt than any other president in the past 200 years (or somesuch claim.)

I'm not going to argue the rights and wrongs of illegal immigration. It's illegal and that's what needs to be said. Honestly though I'd rather have illegals who pay into the system through social security and payroll taxes than freeloaders like PP was talking about taking unemployment while doing nothing to improve their situation.
HOWEVER, people really enjoy forgetting that the US has no official language. While the vast majority of people speak English, it is not our official language and therefore no one is REQUIRED to learn it. We are one of the few developed countries where the majority of people don't speak at least two languages to some extent. I find the fact that most people ONLY speak English to be equally upsetting and a sad testament to our educational system.
I agree with this. I've worked hard for years to master french, and I'm not stopping there. I want to learn Spanish because I'll use it a lot in the states, and after that I want to learn mandarin. Its incredibly important to be able to communicate with others. There are 8 billion people in the world and less than a 10th of them speak english.

When people tell me they are against rehoming pets, I secretly wonder if they are against giving babies up for adoption.
I understand that families choose to bring a pet into their family and that they are promising to take care of their pet for the rest of it's life.
For some reason though I just think it correlates with children.
I was given up for adoption as an infant and I believe it was the most thoughtful, caring, and loving thing anyone could possibly do for me. My family has given me a great life and has opened a ton of doors for me to have a better future. I don't think my 16 year old birth mom and her 15 year old boyfriend could have done the same for me. They had no support system from family and would have had to raise me on their own.

Oh, I don't deny that Bush was an economic turd. Our country has been going in the wrong direction for a long time. However, re-electing a president that is VERY liberal and is a major advocate of social assistance programs (and has done NOTHING in the last four years to help them become less abused...just like everyone before him) is just a little cray-cray to me. I am not saying any of the Rep candidates will for 100% sure do a better job, but I think we shouldn't let any president serve two terms until one can show that he can pull his/her head out of his ass during his/her first term and get our country going in a better direction...especially one where businesses are not at a stand still because they have no idea what corporate taxes lay before them. And it was more the increase in the debt (I admit, some of that would have happened to anyone that was elected) that didn't help my stance on Obama. It was just not the correct time to pass the exact health care bill that they did with our unstable economy.
When people tell me they are against rehoming pets, I secretly wonder if they are against giving babies up for adoption.

I'm glad everything worked out for you, but these are two COMPLETELY different situations that have NOTHING to do with each other.
Comparing the adoption of an infant to the re-homing of an animal is completely ridiculous.
My UO: I am not that proud to be an American right now." About half of all Americans are taking some form of prescription drug and we pay more per person for health care than any industrialized country in the world yet we are sicker than ever. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure are all
diet-related health issues that cost this country more than 120 billion
dollars per year." (Forks over Knives). I highly recommend watching it. It is so earth shatteringly eye opening.
I am currently struggling with high blood pressure, I lost my mom to high blood pressure. I refuse to take medication for the rest of my life when i can simply change my eating habits. I wish other people would take responsibility for their eating habits too. We are a fat country and it grosses me out.

Why should she have to? especially if she does not live in an area like San Diego, Miami, or South Texas? English may not be the 'official' language of the U.S. but here's a list of other counties with without 'official' languages.
the U.S. Japan Mexico Argentina Chile Dominican Republic Nicaragua Uruguay Mauritania Mauritius Andorra
If you go and actually try to live in any of these countries, it will not be acceptable to only speak English.
Also, YOU are the one that needs to get your head out of your ass on this subject. Your argument holds no water, because the things you pointed out are what SS and welfare programs are meant for. These programs were not meant for freeloaders who are too lazy, irresponsible, or just plain don't have a conscience about leaching off of others.

Roe v. Wade may not be overturned but there are state governments out there (Virginia) voting to force women into having an ultrasound before an abortion. What's next, they're going to make these women pick a name and fill out a death certificate too?
Also, the Clinton surpluses that a pp talked about were thanks to a Republican congress led by Newt. So don't think it was because of the Democrats onluy.
The surplus was a budget surplus that was paying back the principle on the debt we owed not a savings account that the Fed had that Bush spent.
9/11 was going to cost money no matter the political offiliation of the current president. Could it have cost less? Sure...that's a whole other debate.

Our kids today are total pansies.
I agree. Sometimes life isn't fair. Kids need to learn this at an early age. What is the point of trying to force them to socialize in situations they are clearly not welcome in?
Maybe my kid just won't invite classmates at all!
My children do not invite classmates because they have too many cousins. I would go broke paying for family and classmates too.
I definitely think children are sometimes sheltered too much by rules like this, but perhaps this rule helps to teach them to treat everyone equally. Just because you are invited, it doesn't mean you have to go. I always ask my boys when we get an invite and never force them to go just because they were invited.

My UO: I am not that proud to be an American right now." Good for you that dietary changes got your problem under control. It doesn't work that way for everyone.
I don't super duper love Obama, but what scares me about most of the Republican potentials is that they care TOO much about things that are none of the government's business....like what goes on in my uterus. That is a pretty important "social" issue to me.
You actually kind of made my point. We have a super liberal president, and he, obviously, had no bearing on what that state did. Therefore, some of the social ideals of presidents honestly won't play into what happens.
FWIW: I find it disgusting that the government is involved in anything with abortion. It is between a women, her family and her doctor. I also don't think the government should pay for any abortion, either. Just get the frick out of our personal lives!
Man, I think my headache is turning me a tad bitchytoday!

Here is my UO: I want to re-home my cat. I hate fleas almost as much as I hate Mosquitos. I was the one that wanted the cat, but I wasn't considering the fact that we don't have a place in our house that is good for a litter box. We have put it on the screened in porch, but now we have fleas. They flock to my 5 year old like HE is an animal. He has bites all over his body. I would rather give the cat to our friends that just had to put theirs down than fight a constant battle to keep our home free of fleas.

Not necessarily true. I live in Minnesota where there are just as many Hmong and Somalians as Mexicans. Should I have to learn three other languages so that I can do my job? Sounds crazy to me.
Alright...since we've hopped on the political train today - I figure I'll say my piece. My opinion is that I am SICK TO DEATH that the candidates have decided the "hot button" issues should be topics issues such as abortion (which Santorum seems to be turning into a religious crusade against women), rights to contraception (who says what I can do with my body?...I freakin' love the women in GA who are stating that if abortion becomes illegal, they want vasectomies to be so too...take that!), and gay marriage (for goodness sake, if two people love each other...it's between them!...let them marry, for Pete's Sake!).
Honest to God, I would be THRILLED if some of these candidates would start talking about issues like the rising (with no end in sight) GAS PRICES...my goodness, we're at almost $5.00/gallon and NO ONE seems to care. Must be because they're making so much money devising a plan to take away (or keep away) rights, that they don't care about the little people trying to figure out how to get to work every day. I'm so pissed and sick to death of hearing about how politicians want to take away rights (especially of women, you know, us second class citizens...growl), but in the same breath want to cut funding for social programs.
Ignorant as it may seem, I am running away from the news outlets, sticking my fingers in my ears, and humming the Pledge of Allegiance (which, by the way, says Liberty UNDER GOD...not Jesus, or Allah, Yep...GOD) until they start addressing issues that really matter. And if you don't want to say God, just don't say it. I don't care.
Re: UO
I most definitely did NOT re-elect Bush. I can't believe he won that election. Country full of idiots.
I find it humorous that this board is full of posts today pointing out the flaws in our systems when it comes to social assistance and the insane amount of taxes we pay for some of those programs (that are being horribly abused), but are gung-ho on voting for a President that has/will increase our country's debt more in 8 years than anyone else has in the last 200 years!

Frankly, I can't think of anything that would give me greater motivation to do something baby related than MIL saying I couldn't do it!
Well said
.
I will separate my UOs into 3 categories:
I usually try to stay away from politics here (its not why I come to this board), but I enjoy this graph re: the deficit: https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/obamas-and-bushs-effect-on-the-deficit-in-one-graph/2011/07/25/gIQAELOrYI_blog.html
I don't want one either. It would just be more stressful than worthwhile.
I completely understand, I was actually hoping that my U/O would help steer everyone from the huge political debate that is currently underway. I figure people get more passionate and angry about their pets and loved ones than politics.
Why should she have to? especially if she does not live in an area like San Diego, Miami, or South Texas? English may not be the 'official' language of the U.S. but here's a list of other counties with without 'official' languages.
the U.S.
Japan
Mexico
Argentina
Chile
Dominican Republic
Nicaragua
Uruguay
Mauritania
Mauritius
Andorra
If you go and actually try to live in any of these countries, it will not be acceptable to only speak English.
Also, YOU are the one that needs to get your head out of your ass on this subject. Your argument holds no water, because the things you pointed out are what SS and welfare programs are meant for. These programs were not meant for freeloaders who are too lazy, irresponsible, or just plain don't have a conscience about leaching off of others.
Roe v. Wade may not be overturned but there are state governments out there (Virginia) voting to force women into having an ultrasound before an abortion. What's next, they're going to make these women pick a name and fill out a death certificate too?
That is a pretty important "social" issue to me.
They chose to come to America so they should be ready to deal with any changes. While we don't have an official language, it is pretty universal that we speak English here in America. If you want to come to America, learn some English. We shouldn't have to adapt to you when we've been here speaking English all along.
Do you really think San Diego, Miami, and South Texas are the only areas with spanish speakers? I live in TN and there are a TON of spanish speakers in my area. It would be useful to know conversational spanish no matter where you are in the states.
Good for you that dietary changes got your problem under control. It doesn't work that way for everyone.
And thats ok if you don't want to adapt. but if you're not going to put any effort forth to communicate with them, don't b!tch and moan when you can't!
^this
Not necessarily true.
I don't care.
...Now I need a candy bar. Hmph.
