giving anything up for Lent

without getting into a super religious discussion - does anyone give something up for Lent?

I use to every year the last few years I have not because I have not thought of something - today I decided on chocolate - which hopefully will be a help in losing weight!  Goodbye Boston Creme donut I will miss you!

I am not either  but it is something my sisters and I have done since we were teenagers - the town I am from has 4 churches 2 are Catholic so a lot of our friends were which is why we started doing it along side them.

If you read this and are Catholic I hope my reasoning doesn't offend you.

  • Not Catholic (but my dad is).  But I tried giving up candy (YES I already failed).  I was doing fine all day til I found two pieces of chocolate in my desk drawer in the late afternoon (thought I had eaten it all yesterday) and I ate them.  I would not make a good Catholic.

  • I'm Methodist but our church encourages giving up something for lent. I'm giving up pop and chocolate because it'll be good for me. We go by the rule that you get to cheat on Sunday. So I'll be looking forward to every Sunday for the next few weeks :)

  • I do.

This year I am giving up Diet Coke and fast food. I am mostly giving up fast food because my husband is. But giving up Diet Coke is going to be rough!

  • I am Baptist and we do not as a practice give up anything for Lent.  Some people at my current church do.  Other look to take up good habbits- like Bible Study, Prayer, Kinder attitudes, etc.

I like the idea of cheating on Sundays - girl scout cookies arrived today that definitely makes giving up chocolate harder

  • I'm the worst Catholic - I haven't done this in years.
  • I did not understand Lent until a few years ago.  I remember one year in college my cousin who is Catholic gave up green M&M's.  She lived on M&M's and instead of giving away the green ones she kept them all in a jar so she could eat them after Lent.  I thought that was weird but I did not understand the true purpose of Lent at that time so I just rolled with it.

I don't think that counts - to only give up 1 color M&M and continue eating all of the others. That's a cop out! LOL But very funny ;)
  • I gave up road rage. I don't think giving up candy will positively change me. Yelling at strangers will.
