We just happened to turn it on here at work. I am not knocking anyone for trying to save money, but some of the things they did, were a little ridiculous.
One guy asks people for their leftovers are restaurants and takes them home to eat. He also goes into random restaurants and asks for ketchup packets, takes them home and refills his ketchup bottle. He takes 2 ply toilet paper and seperates them and makes it into two rolls. He said he only married his wife, because at the time he needed dental surgery and she had a job and insurance. He also said that after the wedding, he collected the rice people threw at them leaving the city hall and used it to cook dinner that night. For their 25th wedding anniversary, he dumpster-dived and found a tea pot and a 1/2 dozen of dead pink roses for his wife. Then he went to a store and bought her a .29 box of animal crackers and some wierd squishy alien head.
The second lady, uses wash clothes or other clothes instead of toilet paper. She took her kids grocery shopping at a place where they sell expired food. She bought spaghetti sauce that expired in 2009 and expired cheese to make pizza. They also went into the woods to get things to make a "wild salad." They found "wild chives" and added it to lettuce. When she had people over, she offered them some and they said no.
The third guy goes looking for loose change in booths, the laundry mat, near the pay phone, etc. They also do one week a year where they do not spend any money (kind of a good idea, I think). He also takes the last slivers of soap, puts them in his wife's used panty hose and uses the soap that way. He somehow (I missed how, was busy) came home with 2 goat heads that he cooked for dinner. It looked disgusting. Whatever you like to eat, just not for me. They decided when they first got married they were going to keep the standard of living at the time. So, they did not get I-Phones or I-Pods or flat screen TVs. They also do not drive.
Just kind of interesting!
Re: Has anyone watched "Extreme Cheapskates" on TLC?
I'm honestly not sure how most of these people found relatively normal mates who put up with their nonsense.
Also, many people use wash cloths for TP. It's called family cloth. They also use reusable pads.
I like the small prices of soap in panty hose idea. I just thought it was weird that they were used and he didn't just cut the foot off or something, he used the whole pantyhose, crotch, bot legs attached. It grossed me out
I love this show. I think a lot of the things they did were a little drastic, but I was all for the cloth toilet paper. IF I was ever that strapped or was really thinking about going green and repurposing all old items, I would consider this option. I always wondering, if I was an extreme couponer and extreme cheapskate, how much money I actually could be saving.
