Babies on the Brain

How does your area celebrate Fat Tuesday?

I live in Central PA, so its Fasnacht day!!! Fasnachts are really just donuts without the hole.  They traditionally were made as a way to empty the house of lard sugar fat and butter, which were fasted during lent.

Ive already had a powedered, and a sugared... and its only 8:30am.. this is going to be a long and yummy day,.

  • I'm sure OK celebrates it somehow, but I have no idea what goes on.

  • North east, we do nothing really.  I would love some king cake though.  I'm starving, yumm!

  • We don't. Although I certainly wouldn't be opposed to the donut run that one of my coworkers keeps talking about.

  • Pancakes! Shrove Tuesday/Fat Tuesday would be a day of eating pancakes for the same reason of clearing out the lard/oil.

A tradition when I was young was to have money cooked into your pancakes. (after being sterilized and wrapped but I refrain from that now, seemed great as a child)

The schools and churches will usually have pancakes served to everyone today and then from now until Easter there will be a fish fry every friday.

EDIT Just wanted to mention I am in Ontario, Canada. My family is from the east coast of Canada.

  • It's paczki day in Chicago. I've already eaten three. :)

  • In Germany, the entire town shuts down and have a huge parade that ends in a town festival.  Its actually kind of a pia for me.  The section of the village they shut down is right around my house, so if I dont happen to be home when they shut down the streets, I end up having to park several blocks away.  And I am never at home becuase I have to work.

  • I don't know anyone that does anything.  I did notice some paczki in the grocery ad, but that was the first I'd ever heard of it.

  • I don't think we do. At least, I've never heard of anywhere in Canada doing anything.

I'm a lurker, but in Michigan it's paczki day! (pronounced poonchkey).

It's similar to what OP has, but is comes from the large Polish community in metro Detroit. It's a deep fried doughnut with filling inside.

They are delicious.  Coworkers are trying to get me to eat one already. I need to wait a little while, or else I'll eat about 3 by the end of the day.

    Edited to correct spelling.

Yeah I live in Michigan too. I forgot to get one at the gas station today so I probably won't get one today. boo.

I am in Canada, Toronto to be exact. So, there are many of us here who do celebrate.

My family is from the East Coast and all throughout there they celebrate as well.

(Even the public schools have pancakes but it's more the Catholic schools who make a bigger deal out of it, so maybe that's why you haven't celebrated...assuming you aren't Catholic)

Yes   I've only had one (my husband brought some home) but I had already ordered a half dozen from the local bakery for tomorrow :O  We are going to gain like 10lbs.

  • Here in STL we have a pretty big celebration.  Right now there is a Mardi Gras parade and there was one on Sat.  I think there was a pet parade last week too.  A lot of our stores have a bunch of decorations and king cake.
  • I work in the French quarter.  Mardi Gras is my favorite holiday.  But now that it's 12:03 I'm very happy to see its over.  By the way tomorrow is national margarita day.  Cheers!
