What to do with an old mattress?

We need a new mattress for one of our guest rooms, but I've been putting it off because I didn't know what to do with the old one. Any ideas? I would give it away via Craigslist (it's clean and doesn't have bed bugs!) but I am now a little scared of CL deals.

  • I believe most places will take the old ones away when they bring the new ones.

  • I'd sell it on CL--people will definitely buy it.

    this.

  • Do y'all feel like it's safe to have a stranger from CL come to your house? I used to think it was no big deal, but recently there has been so much bad stuff, it makes me nervous.

I do it when my husband is home. If that doesn't work, I meet them outside (garage usually) in the daytime and I let my husband know in advance and I have my cell phone on my person, as well as my handgun.....j/k....just my phone :)

  • If it doesn't sell, maybe see if there is a family with little kids who would want it?  We had my parents' old mattress down in our basement when we were kids and used it as a trampoline.  It was the BEST.

  • Just put it outside and put a sign that says free. Craigslist has been ify but if you just post that it's there and your not going to meet them just if it's there it's there then it shouldn't be bad. If you buy from like Mattress Firm they take the old one away or you can donate the mattress and get a tax receipt.
  • When we got rid of our old mattress and box spring, we just put it on the curb for large trash pick-up. However, not 30 minutes after we put it out there, some one came by and picked it up. People will definitely pick-up/take used mattresses.

However, I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it unless it was almost brand new. Just put it up on Freecycle.

  • Anything I would give away for free on CL I put out the night before by the trash. It's always gone in the morning. There are people who have little trailers that go up and down the streets on trash day. Some use it to host their own garage sales for extra income. Works for me! Effortless.
