Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Mommy vs. Abby: Bottle Weaning Day 2

Day 1 goes to Abby, who MAY HAVE had enough sips to constitute an ounce.

Now we begin Day 2. My child is overwhelmingly strong-willed. She is begging for milk but flat-out refuses to drink it out of a sippy.

She LOVES sippy cups for water, BTW, and we have tried approximately 10 different varieties the past 24 hours to see if she'll take to one of them.

Nope.

She's like an adult who hasn't had her coffee. It's REALLY fun.

  • This was Hunter and with his milk allergy. I NEEDED him to drink milk to not lack anything. His pedi said to increase calcium foods during the time. I understand the quantity of sippy cups. I own about 20 of them. In the beginning Hunter would NOT drink milk and water out of the same sippy. I just did cold turkey after awhile and kept offering the milk in the cup to him as many times as I could in a day..maybe 100 times. She will get it. GL

DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

    Exactly.

She would literally spit out the milk as though it were poison if I tried to give it to her out of a cup she typically drinks water out of.

Thanks for the encouragement ... needed!

  • You may tried this already, but have you tried warming up her milk in her sippy? I BFed and never warmed T's bottles up, but I just recently learned that DCP was warming her one sippy of milk. Apparently she was not taking it, which is weird because we have never had an issue, but whatever works. She drinks all of her milk cold with me.

    Good luck, stay strong.

Thanks! My kid is literally just stubborn as all get-out. She knows she can get the milk from the cup, but is refusing out of principle. It will be that point when the benefit outweighs the cost of losing the battle that she will cave.

I'm just hoping that's sooner rather than later ...

  • Stay strong and GL! Gotta love strong-willed toddlers :)

  • Good luck! We are going through a similar situation. DS hates the sippy. He just refuses to drink. We have attempted getting rid of the bottle 8 times. Today is also day 2 for us. Stay strong!

  • I am just jumping in to say that I am not looking forward to doing that with C, and Abby is SOOO cute!  Good luck, mama!

  • Have you tried the ZoLi straw sippy cups? My ds transitioned easily with them and doesn't like his milk in any cup except them. The straws are really flexible like a nipple and there's no wasted milk because of the weighted straw design. Sorry for the PSA but we love them.
  • Abby sounds like Danica. We are going to be doing this within the next few days too. She LOVES her ba-bas.

  • Have you tried a non sippy cup.  My DS will refuse to drink period sometimes, but the novelty of drinking out of an adult cup always wins him over.  I just help to guide his hands.  They do make a cup for kids to help them transition from a sippy cup to a real cup.

I bought some straw cups that have designs to clearly differentiate between her water cups and milk cups. I successfully got her to take about 5 sips (yes, this was a victory).

With adult cups, she really doesn't do well. She not only doesn't get that she has to put the cup between her lips, she tilts the cup back so vigorously, she gets water all over her face and up her nose and chokes herself. It's a work in progress. :)
