High-Risk Pregnancy

GD question

So i have my GD test in a few days, i have no reason to think i have it, but i know that regardless if i do or not i eat and drink way to much sugar. Ive heard from other posts that eating sugar free products is bad if there sweetened with artificial sweetners. We i figured some would be okay and that people were just over exaggerating. Well anyway it got me thinking if you get diagnosed with GD is it okay to eat more sugar free products? I googled and found a list of "free" items and it had stuff like sugar free syrup and diet soda on there. So now im confused. Obviously something the doctor will go over with me if i do have it but im just wondering now. How much sugar free or artificial sweetners is okay? and is it really dangerous or just one of those unknown things?

Re: GD question

  • Some artificial sweeteners are safe in pregnancy, some aren't.  My nutritionist said it was safe to drink Crystal Light while pregnant and the pregnancy safe artificial sweeteners in moderation.  I generally avoid artificial sweeteners.  I find that they make me crave sweets.  I do better without them.

  • My personal choice is to just skip things that have too much carbs/sugars. Artificial sweetners seem to leave a bad after taste. I don't drink soda though so it will be easy for me. My challenge is that I love carbs.....cereal, bread, pasta. I was diagnosed and see a nutritionist on Tuesday.

  • My doctor said that things sweetened with Splenda are ok, but I wouldn't go crazy with the artificial sweeteners.  Eating too much artificial sweetener can have a laxative effect.  If you do have GD, a lot of "sugar free" products still have a lot of carbs, sometimes even more so than their full sugar counterparts.

  • My OB and nutritionist both ok artificial sweeteners in moderation. It really is a personal decision. I don't use any in the first trimester, but having GD I do allow myself to have splenda in my coffee or a diet soda if I want one. I also eat sugar free pudding sometimes.

  • I was told it's alright to have splenda or stevia, but to be careful of the others. I do still let myself have a diet pop on occasion but mostly stick to just water and avoid the sugar free stuff for the most part.

Sugar free pudding has been my one weakness.  I need my chocolate fix!

This exactly! The Jello cups are made with Splenda, but the boxes have aspartame. I've avoided aspartame while pregnant, but the midwife at my fetal diagnostic center said Splenda is safe because it doesn't go to the baby.

  • I was told to completely avoid all sugar-free products entirely, like syrups, jellies and candies.  I put 2 tsps of raw sugar in my 1 cup of coffee every morning and it doesn't mess with my blood sugar so far. I do have my coffee with breakfast though so that probably helps.  The yogurt my dietician recommended, yoplait light, has aspartame. She also said that I could use splenda in small amounts.
