lent?

Anyone giving up anything or doing anything special for lent?

I'm debating whether it's fair or not to give up alcohol. I may make an effort to do some kind of volunteer activity or donation I wouldn't normally make once a week instead of giving something up this year.

Re: lent?

  • No fair giving up alcohol for Lent (although if you haven't given it up yet then you may want to consider it, haha!!).

I'm debating on what to give up this year myself.  Nothing food related because I know I'd just crave it the entire time I couldn't have it. I'm at a loss at the moment.

  • yeah....giving up something you already can't have is completely missing the point of lent. You're supposed to give up something you love, and spend the time you would other wise spend with/on/doing that something to worship or reflect. Personally, I don't do lent because my denomination doesn't, but I used to work at a methodist church and taught this to my kids.

  •  I *might* give up sweets.
  • Yeah, I don't think alcohol counts at this stage in the game lol ;)  The past few years I have (with varying degrees of success) tried to do something proactive each day rather than give something up.  ie, clean out a closet I've been avoiding, exercise when I don't feel like it, do a scrapbook page or other craft, etc.  I find it's actually more of a challenge to actively do something rather than avoid something and it's more productive/useful.  Just an idea...plus, the idea of giving up sweets or something I love/crave while pg just ain't happening for me, haha!

I usually give up ice cream and even thought it's the same thing every year, it's torture.  This year will be even worse because I've been craving it the whole time I'm pregnant.  But, it's a sacrifice.

I like the idea of doing something good each day too.

  • Last year I gave up going out to eat, and my husband gave up meat, so we were both eating mostly vegetarian home-cooked meals the whole forty days.

This year I think I'm giving up cursing.  I'm really terrible about cursing when I'm at home.

  • I'm not really giving anything up this year but instead going to try and better myself :) My goal is to try and workout at least 3 times a week...I've been slacking big time since finding out we were pregnant and should probably get back into it...We will see how this goes :)

I think I should really give up cursing as well.   I want to have a cleaner vocabulary by the time baby gets here.

  • As an adult, I've focused less & less on abstaining from something & more & more on working on something in my life that separates me from grace.  Usually I work on my relationship with my mother or MIL, haha.  This year during Lent I'm going to focus on having more patience & tolerance overall, and being a more kind person.

  • I've been thinking about this for a while.  I don't usually give up something.  I was raised Catholic but have not been so good at following it as an adult.  I'm sure it will change somewhat now with a baby coming.  Anyway, I was thinking of giving up facebook.  I find myself always checking it on my phone, my work laptop or at home.  It's starting to annoy even me.  There's so much other stuff that I should be doing or need to be doing.  hmmmm....
  • I'm not going to give anything up but I do plan on cursing less and praying more, like maybe saying the rosary daily. I also like what another poster said about being a kinder person.

It's true. or you can add something to your life that will cause you to reflect, better yourself, etc. It annoys me when people consider lent just to be a 40-day personal challenge, with no real benefit to themselves or others. Even if you're not overly religious, at least donate some time or money to a favorite charity or something if you choose to give something up.

Anyway, I definitely think I need to give up internet time, or at least seriously restrict it. I know that I spend too much time online during the day to the detriment  of my housework, errands, better quality time with DS and DD, etc :(  There are definitely better, more productive, and joy-filled activities I could be doing with my time.
