I had blood taken to test my AMH this afternoon. Any experience with this? I just read up on it and I get what it tests but now I'm kind of freaked out. If it's low is that a good indicator of crappy fertility? I think I have to wait about a week for the results.![]()
Thanks!
Re: Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) Experience?
It took a week for me to get the results each time. I've had it done 3 times (GYN and 2 different REs)- it was less than 0.16, 0.24 and 0.34 respectively. Apparently anything under 1 is not good; but over 40 (like I am) they kind of expect it to be low. They also look at FSH (mine is 11.2) and AFC. The NP at my GYN's office looked at my number and told me I'd never conceive without DE; the RE's I have seen think I have a shot with my OE.
One of the REs I spoke to told me it is an indicator typically of how well you'll respond to IVF- however; he has had women in his practice get PG with undectable AMH- and carry the pregnancy to term.
I think that the AMH is something that needs to be looked at within the context of the other tests, too.

Mine came back very low .34 and RE said this indicated diminished ovarian reserve.
very sad news for us. It was recommended that we go straight to IVF. Had to start with IUIs for insurance though. I hope you do not get same news, but if you do, I am here to commiserate and share experiences ( redundant I think) .
I do agree with previous post about context of other tests and I have not given up hope!
Like the PP said, this is one of many tests that all tie together, and they like to see the level at 1 or higher.
With mine being at 0.22 they told me it meant my ovaries are slowing down a bit and not working as well as they could be. However, my diagnosis of Diminished Ovarian Reserve is the AMH level in conjunction with my high FSH level.
The waiting is the hard part. I hope you get good news from your test results!
I'm pretty sure it's an indicator of number, but not quality of eggs. As we age, it should get lower so if your number is good, than great! you're younger than your age, but as long as it isn't super low, nothing will change about your RE's approach. At least that's what my RE said. She uses FSH and AFC to determine doses and manage expectations.
I didn't get the test. My attitude. We were going to try one cycle of IVF no matter what, and what was it going to tell me, that I'm old? I already knew that.
Hopeully the test will indicate you're young for your age.
I agree with previous posters that it really needs to be looked at in context with the rest of your day 3 bloodwork (FSH, TSH, Estradiol).
Here's a good link to explain it all.
