We're in the market for a new living room sofa (and ottoman- not necessarily matching.) We have a large playroom with 2 couches and a big TV set up for movies and such so it's not like my son and future kids will be in the living room all day, but i'm still obviously concerned more with function over fashion at this point. Right now we have a brown leather sofa and I hate it. It's getting moved into the "man room" and H said I could get whatever I want (he typically fights me on decor/furniture and we end up compromising.) Really, i'd love something like this, but can you picture it after a few years of toddlers with sticky hands?!

So maybe i'll get what I really want when all the kids are in college!
Is the micro-fiber the way to go? Is it best to get a pattern? I don't want anything too dark so I want to make sure it's easily clean-able and/or hides stains well. Slipcovers annoy the sh!t out of me ![]()
Any recs? Anything to avoid (other than white! haha) What couch do you have?
Re: do you have a kid-friendly couch?
Sorry, I can't help you. I'm kind of in the same place you are. Our current couches and chair in the living room are the "bachelor couches" DH picked out when we were still dating and he moved into his own place after graduating college. They're black leather. Great for plopping down into to watch a movie or lounge around, but not so great for your only living room that you would like to look a bit nicer.
We can't really afford to get new ones for a while, and they're not exactly high up on our list of things to exchange - we want to build a patio outside and get a dining room table first. The couches work for now because they're already a little scratched up (but not obviously) from the pets, they're wipe-able, and I'm really not concerned about kids destroying them. Don't get me wrong, I won't let them know that; they still have to be careful. But it wouldn't be the worst thing if something bad happened to the couches.
We don't have a family room, it's a living room only, and then we have a playroom with a loveseat in it.
Just bought this new couch in the dark grey. We've had it about 3 weeks and already washed blueberries, cereal, and mud off of it, lol... We have a 3 year old and a big dog.
One of the reasons I bought from Macys was that they have a great fabric protection plan...it was about $190? and covers everything imaginable. If they can't clean the stain, they replace the couch. It's good for 7 years, and at the end of 7 years if we haven't used the plan, we get a Macy's gift card for the purchase amount. We also bought our rug there and they have the same plan for rugs.
Dark. Brown. Leather.
It's wipeable, doesn't stain, and only looks better as it ages.
We have an ugly old, hand-me-down couch. It is multi-colored, but you'd never think it was dirty (even though all sorts of things have spilled on it).
We have microfiber kitchen chairs and I must clean them wrong, because they look awful :-P I always hear how easy that stuff is to keep clean, but yeah - I can't seem to do it.

Ours is kid-friendly, dog friendly and DH friendly too.
It's microfiber. not my favorite, but cleans like a dream. I have used the steamer on when doing the carpets and I happen to know that a baby wipe will get our ink and sharpie out of it as well.
One day, I will get the white couch of my dreams, but it's light years away at this point.
Thanks ladies! I've had the microfiber in a dark maroon ("Merlot") in almost the exact same style as the link theJen posted. We bought it from a fancy furniture store when we bought our first house. It was the best couch ever, but didn't fit well in any of the rooms in our new house (A huge sectional won't really work with our floorplan.) I gave it to my brother
I seriously miss it and wish it was still here (though I never loved the color.) He loves it though, so at least I gave it to a good home
I think that's the route i'll go. Comfy darker microfiber. Then maybe i'll get a nice chair for myself that will be a pretty mommy chair and no kids are allowed on it! hahaha
I hate leather and it doesn't "go" in our room at all. The current dark brown leather will go in the man room and H will be happy! LOL He just got it when I was pregnant and I thought that's why I found it uncomfortable. I literally haven't sat on the thing since. It's the worst couch ever! I sit on the rocking recliner chair whenever i'm in that room and since P isn't nursing anymore, we can put that ugly thing away for awhile too! (hideous, but I slept on it for the first 3 weeks of P's life and it was a dream!)
ok, off to window shop for furniture online....
We don't allow our DS to eat in the FR so I don't worry about food or anything, but I do worry about regular messes kids make and such. I did get a nice sectional from Macy's that has fitted slip covers that can be dry cleaned. Came in handy last week when DS threw up and got part of the couch. I just took the slip covers off the cushions and took them to the dry cleaners. So happy I got this couch!!
