Baby Names

Honest opinion, snarky or not....

Here are the names we have FINALLY agreed on, I want to know what you all think, and if you think they would be teased to death in school...

Maison Thomas

Olivia Fay

Thank you for the honesty!

**I should mention that his name is Michel, no "A" as is the french spelling... And he gets called Michelle ALL THE TIME!**

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • Neither are my style. Both are fairly popular. I don't care for your spelling of Mason.

    I've heard MUCH worse

  • I agree, just use the traditional spelling. There was a study that showed that children with odd/creative spellings of their names, had parents with less intelligence.

Unless, of course, it is a family spelling; if that is the case, by all means, use it.

  • To be honest, I HATE spelling it MAISON, but I love the name Mason, and my hubby is French so it was a compromise for us. I get the name, he gets the spelling, as i figure when I SAY it i wont say "I", so i figured it was ok....

I know they are both so popular, but I have loved Mason forever, and my hubby loves Olivia and I wanted an "Olive", so again we compromise to Olivia, and i will call her Olive...

I agree with this sorry. Maison means 'house'. Stick with the traditional spelling and then they are both nice names.

Fay is a VERY old family name for me, at least one girl in each generation has it, going back 6 generations that we can track, so the spelling is what it is... I love the name a lot, but could not get hubby to agree to name our daughter Fay as a first name. He is not sure he likes the idea of me calling our daughter "Olive" but he is handeling it for Olivia... lol

  • I don't much care that the spelling Maison means a lot to your husband, it's going to be a PITA for your kid.  No  Thomas Mason is better, imo.  Or Mason Thomas.  Rethink the spelling.  (Coming from someone with a "special" spelled name - it's annoying.)

Olivia is a pretty name but it's a total snooze at this point.  She won't be teased, but she'll be one of 10 in her graduating class.  Meh.

  • Why would your French DH want to name your child house?  To me, Maison and Mason are not the same thing.  Maison also looks like how someone would spell Mason if they were using the name for a girl.

Honestly, it kind of makes it worse for me that your DH is French. So your DH wants to knowingly spell his child's name the same as 'house'? Every time he writes his son's name, he wants to write 'house'?

Not to mention what a PITA it's going to be for your son to correct every single person who has to write his name down...

  • It never occured to me that Maison was supposed to be a form of Mason. I thought you were just using a french word for some reason (considering Mignon is not an unheard of name where I live it wasn't totally out of the blue).

  • At least to me, Mason =/= Maison.  I pronounce one May-Son and one My-Son.  Your DH needs to get over it.  Spelling your son's name this way only ensures that he will have to correct everyone on the spelling and pronounciation of his name.  And saying "yea, Mason with an 'i'" makes ZERO sense...  So he will have to spell the whole thing out every time.

    I like Olivia Fay.

  • I hate to repeat everyone, but I really want you to ask H to rethink this - if a french name means a lot to him, you and H should keep looking until you agree with a male french name you both like. Maison is obnoxious and seeing as it means house in H's language, why does he want to use it? I don't think that "i" will tell anyone - hey this is french - it will seem like you wanted an annoying and unique spelling. I really hope you decide on Mason or look for another boy name you can agree on.

While Olivia is super popular, it's pretty. I like Olivia Fay.

Like, he was born in France?  Or just has French background in his family?  I have a really hard time believing that someone who grew up speaking French would choose to name their child "house."  I honestly think a better compromise would be to go with the real spelling for Mason and pronounce Thomas the French way (toe-mas).

  • When I read Maison, I said it in my head the French way and thought house.  Is it going to be pronounced that way?  It's going to be confusing for your child I think because that is 2 pretty different prounciations.  What about another name that can be said in french and english pretty interchangeably?

Well this is the names we agreed on are going to be used, I was asking if you thought my kid would be teased to no end in school.... I know the names are common and thats what i am worried about being an issue. If you dont like them thats fine with me, we do, and its our baby, and our choice.

I dont mind the opinions, and some of them are funny to read, But i was really just wondering about being teased in school.

Thank you for your opinion though....

  • I'm very surprised that someone with a French background who presumably knows at least a little bit of the language would want to name their son "house". I barely took any French and I know that.

So yeah if Maison's school has French classes, he is probably going to get made fun of.

  • I loooove Olivia, regardless of how popular it is right now, it is a classic and beautiful name! However, I'm not a fan of Fay at all. It sounds like you wanted it to be feminine but it just sounds old. What about Olivia Grace, or Olivia Rose? They are classic and feminine!

I'm not a fan of the name Mason ( which is how I'm assuming you'd pronounce Maison). It IS getting really popular, but I just don't think it's a very good name I don't really have a  name to recommend instead, but since your husband is french, what about Etienne?

Good luck with the names!! Regardless of what all of us think on here, it's your decision and you'll make the right choice! I'm sure there are people out there who won't like my baby names either :)
