Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler Weight Q

So my beautiful little girl is getting a bit chunky. She is currently 30% for height and 67% for weight. The weight is a significant jump off of her curve. Up until 6 months old she was 10% weight and 15% height. When she stopped spitting up she stayed around 30% for both. At her 12 month she was at 40% for weight, so I feel that it is a pretty big jump in three months.

Question is would you consider switching to 2% milk? She eats very healthy, not very much sugar at all, but I had been giving her quite a bit of a fat. I've switched from full fat yogurt to 2% and she isn't getting quite as much pb (her favorite). She just started walking about 2 weeks ago, so hopefully that will help.

Long story, but at our 15 month appointment we really only talked about T's potential seizures so I don't have my ped's advice. However, I know that one ped is super strict on weight and the other one isn't so I'll bet I would get conflicting advice anyways. I know you aren't doctors, I'm just looking for others experiences. Thanks.

Re: Toddler Weight Q

  • If she just started walking, I'd give it another month and see how much she leans out. DS did a LOT. I miss his chub :(

  • My girls are in the 75th and 90th percentiles for weight and height.

The pedi said that was completely normal.

    What's her height percentile?

  • If your daughter is possibly having seizures I would consult a neurologist.  Fat is a very important part of myelination.  If your daughter is possibly having seizures, her myelination could be compromised by them.  I would NOT cut back to 2% milk personally.  I would wait another month.  Maybe she had a full bladder and a full bowel.  One weight is not concerning to me.  If you want to be proactive I would take her back in a week or two and get her reweighed.

She is 30% for height - it was just the big jump off of the curve that was a bit disconcerting. Oh and the fact that I cannot find any non-stretch pants that fit her. S

We did, her EEG was normal (thankfully) they were 'absent seizures' so we need to keep an eye out but for right now everything seems to be normal.

  • Charlotte is off the chart for weight, and her pedi still wants her on whole milk. Make sure you speak to the pedi about possible options before switching milk. Our recommended limiting starches in C's diet.
  • With all the focus on weight in children I think parents are getting  more anxious about weight. A jump off the curve might jump back on next month. What would concern me is if she jumped off the curve and then kept climbing.

I think you should sit down with a registered dietitian if you are planning on changing they way you feed your child based on her weight, and she has another medical condition. I am registered dietitian and would do the same thing.

     Just my thoughts:)

  • A big concern for 2% vs whole milk is that children under 2 need the cholesterol in whole milk to help with brain development. There's plenty of time for her to grow into her weight later!

That said, I'm going to ask my pedi at DS's appt next week if it's OK to have 2% part of the time...he's like 100% wt and 90% height, daycare only provides 2%, and it's annoying for me to remember to buy his own milk every week, but I'll do it if it's best to have it all the time.

I like PP's idea of looking at starches/sugars/other areas of what she eats to see if there's a different way to balance her meals, especially if there is a seizure risk!

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

  • I wouldn't make any changes to her diet right now.  Wait and see how much she grows and gains over the next year and then talk to your pedi about what changes he or she would want to make to her diet. She might have just put on a few lbs recently and over the next few months might grow several inches in height and not gain any weight, which will change her percentile on the weight charts and also change her appearance, making her look longer and slimmer.

  • I can't tell you what to do but at 15 months, per our pedi's suggestion, we switched Eli to 2%. He has been off the charts in height and weight since he was 2 weeks old though so there wasn't a significant jump or change. He is just a big boy.

2% is fine for their brain development. Just don't go lower than that.

Yeah, I would limit carbs and starchy foods before limiting fat. Fat doesn't make you fat, carbs and sugar do. And fats are really important for little kids.

If she's still in the 30%, I wouldn't worry. Do you know if your doctor's office switched growth charts? When I took DS2 to his most recent well-baby visit, his doctor said the CDC or whoever had updated the charts, and he was in a new percentile than he had been before.

  • Our pedi suggested we switch from whole to 2% at our 18-month appt.  My ds is 73% for weight and 90% for height.  He said that the APA recently changed their guidelines about this and that the switch was ok at this point, however your dd is a bit younger so I'd check with your pedi first.
