Need advice on bottle weaning on a skinny baby! Oh, and Binkis!

OK, I know, I know. She is 20 months old today.... but Lyla still takes a bottle. Usually 2 (sometimes if she is home, 3 a day). It guarantees like 18-20 oz of whole milk into her body. The pediatrician isn't freaked out and told me not to worry about it, but at some point I have to get her off the bottle. With baby #2 coming in July, it seems like I should be doing this sooner rather than later! The thing that has kept me from doing it is the fact that the child barely eats. I don't get it, I seriously don't know how she poops so much and manages to maintain life! If it weren't for yogurt, whole milk... and well, ketchup and a few other items that she may or may not eat... I think she would waste away. She is in the 5% for weight. Anyway, could I get some feedback if other mom's waited this long to wean and if so, how did you do it and still assure they would get milk? She loves drinking from a cup--though wouldn't get the same amount down. She is capable of using the sippy cup, but again I don't think she would get as much. The one bottle that is a guaranteed 8 oz of milk is the morning one. OK, go. TIA!

Oh, while I'm at it. How do I deal with the binki thing?? I'm pretty good about not giving it to her during the day and limit it to naps and bedtime... but I see her searching for it during the night so I know that when I take it away it will be a problem. She has a ton of teeth so I'm worried about that aspect. Should I do this before DS arrives or wait until after?

Can you tell I'm starting to panic about a second baby. I'll hold off on my post regarding discipline books and potty training as my mind might explode.

  • What is really scary about time flying is that I just looked at my ticker and apparently I'm 19 weeks pregnant. Yeah, I just told someone today that I was 17.

  • I've got no advice on the bottle thing but for the binky.... We just took it away cold turkey. He wasn't using it at daycare so we figured that at home it wouldn't hurt so much. It was painful for a few days but it wasn't so bad after the second day and after the fourth he stopped looking for it. H and I wanted to give in once each but we kept each other strong and help with distractions. You might try limiting it during the day at first then take it away in car rides then naps etc till she's done with it.

Worse case she keeps it and she'll give it up when she wants. I don't think it's a big deal if she does keep it.

  • It could be that she's not eating much because she's filling up on milk. At her age, it's okay if she only gets 12-18 ounces of milk a day. She'll get her nutrients from food and vitamins and will start drinking more out of other kinds of cups as she gets more used to them and away from a bottle.

I don't know about the paci thing b/c my kids never took them. On the one hand, it seems like you should deal with it now so that there's no confusion when the baby comes about whose paci is whose. On the other hand, it seems like she might need the comfort through the transition?

Our pedi told us not to even think about potty training before the baby came b/c she would regress anyway. So no worries there. :-)

    Dear Bump: You suck.

I would say that is rare for her to get more than 16 or 18 oz. I don't think it is this because I ALWAYS try food before I do a bottle, except in the morning (and usually she will actually eat breakfast).

There's probably no incentive for her to eat though because she knows she gets to fill her tummy with a bottle once she refuses to eat. Whole milk isn't really all that nutritious :( You'd be better off letting her have a little Pediasure or other "Carnation Instant Breakfast" kind of milk based beverage in a cup. Maybe try a smoothie where you can pack in some protein powder and fruits? Will she snack all day if you just leave food out for her? That's what I do when the girls are sick. I leave out crackers and apple slices and they just grab something when they feel like it.

If she enjoys breakfast foods, let her have them all day! For veggies, my Abby has rarely ever eaten a veggie and she's survived. Don't sweat it. We also didn't potty train until age 3 because of the regression risk. I'd rather change 2 sets of diapers than deal with accidents anyway. Even now that Emily has pretty much potty trained herself, I'm damn glad I didn't bother!  She has to pee like every hour. She doesn't understand that feeling like you have to pee doesn't mean you have to go now ;) I would have HATED to be rushing to bathrooms all the time with a newborn in tow.
