Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How did your LO react to teething at night? Was sleep disrupted?

My LO has slept all night long since 3 months, now she is waking up crying at night.  Usually twice.  She hasn't cut first tooth yet.  Unsure what's going on.  She has never done this.  Fine during the day.  TIA!

  • Probably not much help here since we were a little different but I'll share our experiences anyway. Jeremiah was always a good sleeper and STTN since around 2.5 months. Around 4 months he began waking up randomly at night, almost every 3-4 hrs though it didn't happen every night but most nights. He was also fine during the day. Since he was dropping his weight percentiles, we decided that if and when he woke, I would nurse him then put him back down. This happened for about a month and then it just suddenly stopped as quickly as it started. Similar thing just happened with a friend of ours whose baby is a couple months younger than J. I told her our experience and sure enough, she eventually went back to her old sleeping habits after about a month.

Fast forward to almost 3 wks ago, my husband noticed that Jeremiah was beginning to cut teeth. There were never any fevers/crankiness or anything out of the ordinary (He had been chewing for months). The only reason we knew was by feeling and eventually seeing. So his first two teeth came in without incident, he slept just as well as he normally does

I wish I had a more scientific and helpful advice for you! The only thing we did was listen to the cries after a while. If it sounded like he was just waking and was still tired we would let him go for a bit but if he sounded more upset or hungry, that's when I would get up to nurse. Good Luck!

  • Yes, DD had an awful time with sleep right before her first tooth came through, and then again with the second. Teething has not been easy for us! She screamed and woke up a lot. But I had heard that ear infections can do this, so we took her to the pedi- but no, it was just teething again! So, I figure we should expect her third tooth any day now :)  Hang in there, it does eventually subside, at least in between teeth if that is her issue!
  • My LO got her first tooth in January. For two nights before the tooth came through she slept terribly. Her second tooth came through about 2 weeks later. She slept terribly for two nights before that one too! She has only STTN twice though, so waking at night is normal for her.... just not waking every couple hours! She has slept terribly the last two nights also, but I think that might be because she got a cold. Last night was awful. Her nose is too stuffy to sleep well I think.

Your LO could be teething. Or it could be something else. Sorry, not much help I am sure. But GL!

  • Could possibly be the start of teething. We are going through it hard right now. LO is cutting his top 2 teeth at the same time & he is SO unbelievably cranky. Is a little better after giving him a dose of Infant Ibuprofen & hyland teething tablets, but wow. He wakes up every 30 mins or so at night & just whimpers or just straight up cries uncontrollably.

His fever is at a constant 100-101, but spikes up to 102 even 103 at night! it's madness.
