Two questions:'
1. From everything I'm reading, my nearly 3 month old should be moving towards organized day sleep. Is anyone's LO into a routine already? If so, how did you do this?
2. I am in the terrible habit of letting my LO sleep on top of me or in my arms for all daytime naps (it's starting to drive me crazy as I can never get anything done). Any advice on this front?
Thanks in advance!!
Re: Sleep???
I follow the recommendations in the book Baby Whisperer, which is basically "try to put your baby down slightly awake for naps and bedtime" so that they learn to self sooth. If they are completely asleep a lot of LO's will wake as soon as they are laid down.
1. I find cluster feeding in the afternoon really helps fill the tank for DD to sleep at night. I will also offer her a pacifier if it has been less than 4hrs since her last feeding at night (unless I have to change a poopy and she is wide awake). Sometimes we have to put the pacifier back in 3-5 times a night or if it is a really, really rough night put DD in her swing so that we can all get some sleep.
2. I found that both my LO's never were as good at napping as they were at sleeping in their crib at night. My LO's nap in their carseat carrier or in their swing (until they start getting too big). Then I'll put the carrier on a blanket in their crib so atleast they know that is ultimately where they need to be sleeping.
Good luck! Just know that there will be good days and bad days and a lot of patience required to develop healthy sleep habits for LO (no matter when you start sleep training).
Sorry I just re-read your post and you asked about day sleep organization. My LO normally follows a pattern of eat, awake time, and then sleep time (also discussed in the book). DD's first nap is about 2hrs after she wakes in the morning (she normally sleeps 2hrs). Then the cycle repeats. I will wake LO up from a daytime nap if it goes longer than 3hrs sleeping so that she gets enough feedings in the daytime.
1. DS wakes up around 7-7:30 am, 35 minute nap at 8:30/9 ish, 1 hour nap at 11:30am, 1:30-4:05 then we start bed time around 7:30...He put himself on this schedule, I didn't do anything except listen and be aware of his "sleepy" cues.
2. Start by setting baby goals. One nap time by himself and then build from there. I still let DS sleep on me if I am needing to just relax. DS usually sleeps on the couch or in the swing for all his naps. The couch only if I'm in the same room. (DS can't roll over from back to tummy yet)
Just try a variety of things and do what works best from you. Every baby is different.
Good Luck!
