Baby Names

Alternatives or full names for Elle

Could you help me find some?  For years, I had been planning on naming my future daughter Elle.  Elle would have been her full first name.  Unfortunately, I told it to a friend and then she used it for her own daughter.  BUT, I still love the name and I think I could get away with calling my daughter Elle if it were a nickname.  Could you help me come up with some full names for Elle?  (Besides Ella and Eleanor - too common!)

  • What about a name that starts with the letter "L" ex: Louise, Lucy....etc

    Or a name Like Gabrielle.

I think both could use the nn "Elle"

Funny you mention that.  My second choice name is Lila and my sister said, "You could call her Elle - as in the letter L."

  • I've thought about using Michelle with a NN Elle or Ellie. Not everyone's style but maybe it'll help?

  • Don't change the name you love just because a friend used it for her kid. No one has exclusive rights to a name. Name your daughter Elle like you've always wanted. When (or rather, IF) someone comments about your friend's daughter's name, smile and laugh and say it's obvious you both have exquisite taste in names.

But if you're set on not giving your daughter the first name Elle, how about making it her middle name? It's not at all uncommon to go by your middle name rather than first name.

  • My daughter's name is Elodie and we call her Elle.  Other names we strongly considered were Elliot and Eliza.  I also really love Elsa and Elsie.
  • We loved Elle too. My DD's name is Eleanor, and I find it is not common at all, and many people say so too. We actually have gotten in the habit of calling her Ellie. I also like Elliana, Elyse, and Eloise.

I WOULD just use it anyway, but this friend has the same last name as us.  I think it's just too much for friends to have kids with the same first and last name.  Plus, I just don't need our mutual friends thinking I copied her when nothing could be further from the truth.  It sucks that I opened my mouth and she was able to use the name first, but what's done is done.

I do like the name Eleanor.  Part of the reason I said no to Eleanor is because I have a co-worker who is having a girl and due a month before me.  She is planning on naming HER baby Eleanor and calling her Ellie.  It's so frustrating!

  • A much less common one that I think is super pretty and could work is Elnora. I love it, but DH isn't on board....yet.
