What's a good w/end road trip getaway?

I'm not from here so don't know Texas at all other than Austin...  where would be a good place to go for a weekend road trip?  I'd say 5 hours or less of driving.  Would have LO in tow as well.  Thanks!

Re: What's a good w/end road trip getaway?

  • What do you like to do?

  • Loading the player...
  • Fredricksburg for a relaxing bed and breakfast and antique shopping

    Dallas for a big-city geteway

    Houston for museums

    Port Aransas for the beach

Gruene/Luckenbach for a "country western" vacation

New Braunfuls to stay on the river

  • What are you looking to do?

Port Aransas (beach) is 5 hours drive and we've done it a few times.

There are all the traditional cities (Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, San Antonio) and you could do things like Six Flags, Sea World, museums, etc.

We went to Marfa 2 years ago, but it was a bit longer than 5 hours (maybe 8?).  Big Bend is near there too.

I just came on this thread to recommend the same show!

  • Thanks everyone!  In terms of what we like to do... hmmm... it USED to involve finding the best bars/pubs/restaurants, but I'm guessing traveling with a 1 year old makes things a little different.  Hiking, sightseeing, a little shopping?
  • If you haven't been to Fredericksburg, I say go there. Spring is a wonderful time to visit. TONS of good wine out there and I know you like your wine. A lot of the vineyards are kid-friendly with open space for them to run around. I think in May they have a lavender festival, too which is awesome.

ETA: Not far from F-burg is Enchanted Rock where you can do some hiking.

If you haven't been to Dallas or Houston yet, you can make great trips out of either and they're worth checking out once. I actually like Ft. Worth a lot, too. There's a great zoo and museums and parks and the stockyards which  you have to see at least once in your life for the cliche Texan experience.

We've been for the day, but never overnight.  Maybe we'll have to make it a weekend!  thanks
