DD fakes sick to get meds/go to the dr. HELP

I feel utterly lost lately.  She LOVES going to the dr.  She LOVES to take medicine and asks for more.  She now, when you ask "how are you?"  she says "sick.  Because I have da cough coming, dats why I need to go to da doctow"

She's not sick.  She had one day of throwing up 2w ago and now keeps saying "I want to throwup in da trash can"  "I have a stomach ache I need to go to da doctor"... multiple times a day.  She was excited to be at the hospital yesterday, liked getting xrays taken, kept saying "we're all at da hospital!!"...

We tell her no, she's all better, she doesn't need to go.  She argues with us.

I realize a lot of it is that she likes the attention, but um, help?  Please?  Anyone else have a kid who does this?

Re: DD fakes sick to get meds/go to the dr. HELP

  • Kids love medicine and the doctor because the doctor doesn't hurt anymore and the medicine tastes good.  I even like it.  When I give Brooke a shot of Motrin, I take one too and say "and this is for mommy's pain...".  I'm very much in favor of foul tasting medicine.  You're supposed to chase the kid and have to hold them down to shoot the medicine in.  Doctors are supposed to give antibiotic injections to little nail biters who get infected fingers.  But nooooooooo, they can't do that sh*t anymore.
  • LMAO kitty thanks for the laugh - and yeah, sometimes I wish meds tasted disgusting so she wouldn't keep asking for more.

I'm afraid I'm never going to know if she's really sick, she keeps crying wolf on us...dammit.

  • Her evil twin, Gretchen's favorite new excuse for anything is, "but I'm so sick. . . "

She talks at length about the time she threw up all night a few weeks back.

No advice. . . I've been trying to give her different words to use. . . like, when I know she's full after a meal I say, "You feel FULL not SICK" or if she's tired we work on expressing those words instead of just always saying sick.

No idea on the medicine thing, though.

  • My girls are right there with you....its horrible.  I hate it.

HOnestly, now if they complain and say they don't feel well, they get some not so pleasent consequences.

    1. no treats for the day (sweets will make your tummy hurt worse!)

    2. They need to lay down in their bed for 30 minutes until they feel better.

its starting to help.  I don't want them to feel "punished" when they REALLY don't feel well, but I don't want them to think they get babied and get to take meds when they are faking either.....

Its soooooo hard too because now I NEVER know if they are telling the truth or not.....and twice have missed when they are really sick until they are REALLY sick.

  • I KWYM DandR - anytime either of the kids say anymore that they have a tummy ache, I get pins and needles in my tummy awaiting the moment someone is going to vomit.  It's a dash without hesitation down the hall for towels just in case.
