We have been here a year now and I still can not find a decent place to get DS1's haircut. I've taken him to barber shops, Bubbles, kid haircut places and he has only gotten one good haircut in the last year (Bubbles one time but the next time they were terrible and original person was not there anymore). Seriously, why is this so hard?!?!
DS1 does not have a complicated haircut--just a typical little boy's haircut although it is a bit longer. Everyone wants to do the bowl cut across the front which looks horrible. They use the clippers on the sides which is fine but it's like they are afraid of the top and so they do very little to it. This results in DS1 looking like a mop head. It's as if they have no idea how to use scissors to cut the hair on top.
Any suggestions?

We go to Tropicuts in the Cabin John Shopping center. We have a girl so I can't say how they do with boy's haircuts. However, the two women who have cut DD's hair listened to what I wanted.
The other option I know of is Cartoon Cuts in Congressional Plaza on the Pike.
One idea would be to bring a photo of the type of haircut you want him to have. I don't know if you've done that before but maybe that will help.
We take my son to Arlington to the barber shop that my dad and brother go to.
A coworker takes her two boys to Cartoon Cuts at Congressional Plaza and is pleased with them. I may try them out next time so that we don't have to travel so far for a hair cut.
We went to Cartoon Cuts on the Pike for DS's first haircut after an at-home attempt. They were fast and DS did great but the place was crazy loud - I'm surprised DS wasn't at all freaked out by it.
DS did end up with a sort of bowl cut. Like you I'm not sure that they know what to do besides either a bowl cut or a super short typical boy cut. I wanted something with a little length and texture but not sure what - PPs suggestion of looking for photos is a good idea. I'll have to pay more attention to the ads and photos in our magazines, lol.
