Weaning 20m old help :)

Any good tips for me!? I'm having the hardest time weaning my DD. I need to wean so that I can start ttc. My AF has never returned and I'm thinking I have to wean for that to happen. I'm currently using DR Gordan's night weaning plan with some success, but I'm having a hard time limiting daytime nursing.

Any tips or resources? I feel so overwhelmed.

Re: Weaning 20m old help :)

  • I am mostly trying to wean J. before this LO arrives. As for daytime weaning, I never offer. (The only time I offer now is before bed, which he still asks for anyway.)

He still asks sometimes. I say yes if he asks when he first wakes up. Other than that, whether I say yes or no depends on how I feel/what we are doing. For example, he asked today in church. I said no.

Yesterday he randomly asked midmorning. I agreed but then it was painful. I said, "Mommy's milk is going to sleep when I count to 5."

I use that line a lot when I do agree to nurse (Mommy's milk is going to sleep when I count to five). When I've said that, or if I have just said no, I try to have something to distract him with where he gets my attention at least. So I might suggest building block towers or changing the sheets on the bed (he loves this chore).

It seems that even just having a few minutes of one-on-one time with me when he asks to nurse does the trick for us.

  • I have no weaning help as my DD is still nursing.  However, my AF returned when when DD was 26 months old.

  • It sounds like you stay home with her, which makes it a bit more difficult. On days where I am home (weekends, sick days) DD also nurses a bit more, at least once during the day. When she is not ill I do try to limit it so ideally she only nurses in the evening before bedtime and in the morning, right when she wakes up. I try to tell her that she is a big girl, distract her and offer her a glass of water or milk. How often does she nurse during the day? It is a difficult time to wean because they can ask themselves and don't always take no for an answer :-) Don't be too discouraged about the TTC, my mother got pregnant with my second brother without ever getting AF back.

  • One thing I do is try to redirect with soy milk when I don't want to nurse. I'm limiting due to pregnancy tanking my supply and OWIE nipples. It works pretty well during the day and generally we're down to 2-3 times. At night? No clue at all.

  • I also had to wean after ttc for many months with no luck. First, I tried to night wean using Jay Gordon's method without any luck. She just didn't get why she could nurse during the day and not at night. I think it was too confusing. She was 17 months old. We finally just had to wean completely - cold turkey. It was really hard for a few nights, and then she was fine.
