Gift from DS to new baby & vice versa

We wanted to think of a nice (useful) gift for our DS to give the baby. Something besides a stuffed animal. Also, I heard from another parent in our sibling class that she had the baby give a gift to the older sibling. I think this is a good idea especially since I already can see DS feels lost in the shuffle of baby gifts and excitement. It may make him feel more a part of the experience.

Anyone do this with their children? Any suggestions?

I had DS pick out a little lovie blanket(one of those mini blankets with an animal head). Plus, he helped me make a no-sew blanket for his little brother.

Little brother got him a toy that I knew he would love(a toy drill that you use to screw colored screws into patterns/designs) We also had a bag of fun stuff for him(coloring book, an art kit, some new hotwheels, etc) that we gave him so he would have stuff to do while visiting us in the hospital.

We got a blankie for baby from DD also. As soon as she found out about the baby she kept trying to give her special blankie to the baby, so it's helped her understand that she will keep her special things, and won't have to share everything. For DD from baby, I'm going to put together a bag full of activity stuff. Especially stuff she can do solo

We didn't get anything from DS1 to DS2, but DS1 got a camera. huge hit since everyone was taking pics he got to too.

We got DS a tent. I wanted to get him something that he could play with independently (while I was nursing, etc). Another great idea is a barn with animals.

DS chose a soft toy for DD. A nice book is another good idea.

I agonized over choosing "just the right thing" for my unborn DS to get his almost-4-y/o sister. She was fully old enough to know what a disruption he was going to be to her only-child status, and I was hoping that the right gift from him would soften the blow. What a waste of agony!

She was old enough to know that the baby in Mommy's tummy hadn't "gotten" her that activity book!! Plus the hospital visit itself was so fascinating and diverting that she didn't really care about a gift from the baby, quite honestly.

The idea about getting the older child a camera is fantastic. That way, he/she can be involved in the "big person" activity of taking pictures -- very cool!

I also love the camera idea. DS has recently become interested in having people smile so he can pretend to snap a pic with whatever object he's holding, so this would be perfect. Thanks for the idea!
