We have our "nice" carseats in my car which is the vehicle we use 80%+ of the time but we need a back-up in DH's car. Recommend a convert. that would be a good back-up, say no more than $100...

This exactly! It had great reviews too.

We have it and it is great! I use it for my girls on occasion and it is very easy for me to install/uninstall.
