Future Birthday Parties

Are you planning to throw a big birthday bash for your LO every year?

I never really had birthday parties growing up, just a small family dinners with some cake at the end.  I was thinking of maybe just doing 1st, 5th, 10th, 16th, 21st...something like that?  Where all the school buddies can be invited, family, friends, etc for some kind of themed thing. Then the other years will just be smaller family get togethers to celebrate?  What do you think you will do?

Re: Future Birthday Parties

  • I'll try to have a decent sized birthday each year but not a huge bash.

  • My mom always went all out for our bdays. I don't think I'll throw big bashes, I might be doing a them this year but even then it won't be all out just a cook-out. Plus I don't think boys care as much as girls--like having a princess theme or a trip that, what's that store for girls that is like a spa and they ride in a limo? Well, girls are into that, I think boys as long as they get their friends together and some cake are happy :) --I hope lol.
  • We only do first birthday parties and then plan on not doing any other ones until they start asking for them (and we still won't do them every year).  The preparation and stress over getting ready for it is just too much for me, especially with two kids.  We will still celebrate birthdays as our family of four with cake, but that is about it.

  • I had a 'friends' party every year and then a birthday dinner/cake on the actual day of my birthday. I'll do the same for DS.

  • I would like to keep future birthdays small. My family never really went all out for birthdays so I am not used to big birthdays except for milestones.

  • We always bring LO into bed the day of their birthday and sing Happy Birthday just us family and a little present then. but always a birthday party. especially, then they hit 3 they know of their friends party and they're way into the whole concept and the party has lots of leverage leading up to it! Plus, I enjoy planning it. DS1 and I start talking about a 'theme' early. I'm his party planner and so I "execute" on his vision. But, we don't go over the top. It is all about the jumpy and some food on the grill in the backyard.
At some point, i'd like to alternate years. Like a party with 15 friends every other year and then on off years a special day trip just the 4 of us or with 1 or two of his friends like to Disneyland or something.

  • Birthday parties were big in our house. They were always house parties. I think my parents started inviting the class when I was in preschool. My mom was an elem teacher so she had control of little kids.

Up until 3rd grade-I typically had themed parties-Rainbow Brite, Pound Puppies, Raggedy Ann. My mom would create games centered around the character. (i.e. pin the dog bone on the puppy.) My grandma was a seamstress so she would sew an adult sized costume for my baby sitter as the "character." The baby sitter would read a story to everyone.

After third grade we had an arts and crafts party (t-shirt decorating, safety pin bracelet, etc) Those were the girls in my class and neighborhood girls and girls from my Hebrew School.

I plan to do something similar with my LO.

  • I think we'll plan a decent sized 1st birthday party and then wait until she starts asking for a birthday party.

  • We're inviting family and close friends to the first birthday party (20-30 people) and it will probably be smaller after that. When he gets bigger we'll do a friends party, and then a dinner with family. So not huge, but definitely will celebrate. :)
