could this be normal swelling or pre e?

I did go to a formal event last night, but I spent most of the night sitting down. I had my feet propped up the entire evening and drinking more water than i probably should have>(the bathroom break count was 17).  So this morning I wasnt paying attention to my feet and just propped them up while i was sitting in class. I just so happened to look down and they are so swollen. My ankles look like my knees, and the only thing not swollen on my feet are my toes! My hands are not as swollen as they were last night. Am I tripping or could this be pre-e? Sorry if this sounds a little crazy but I am a ftm, and from what i hear i should save all of my spazzez for after LO gets here.

Re: could this be normal swelling or pre e?

  • If you are worried, run out and check your BP at lunch.

I wouldn't worry too much about swelling unless it is accompanied by another pre-e symptom. Obviously you can't check the protein in your urine, but if you start to see spots and/or your BP is elevated, then call your OB.

  • I have horrible swelling since 20 wks.  I am a teacher and on my feet all day.  As long as your blood pressure is okay, I'm pretty sure its normal.  Earlier this week my ankles starting swelling and my feet got worse than ever.  I called the OB nurse and she told me to take my blood pressure.  Once I told her it was normal, she told me to not worry, prop my feet up over my heart, and to drink lots of water.  I know it seems counter-productive, but water will flush out all the excessive fluid.

I would just find a blood pressure machine to ease your mind.

  • It could just be normal swelling. Right now my feet and ankles are normal but they have been swelling on and off for about a month. Sometimes it lasts for a few days. I've talked to my OB about it and he said that as long as my BP isn't climbing, and my urine tests keep coming back normal, then there isn't anything to worry about. Just keep your feet up as much as you can. Call your OB's office about it to put your mind at ease.

  • I agree with the pps, don't freak out if you don't  have any other symptoms. When i was having trouble with swelling and seeing my OB, they were only concerned if it was accompanied by a spike in BP, or other things. When you can, go to a drug store and check you BP. It wouldn't hurt to call you doctor and get direction from him or her too.

    All of this!

  • I'm also going to agree with PPs. I've had swelling that goes up and down and this week I've had a horrible headache. Some of my friends/family on FB suggested I get my BP checked because of the headache (my swelling hasn't been any worse than normal) and so I went to the grocery store pharmacy at lunch and it checked out fine. I plan to mention it at my MW appt today but I've also heard from lots of (non-pregnant) friends that they are experiencing headaches from the weather system moving through.

    You probably are :)

I would still go check my BP though. Take a minute and then you will pretty much know for sure it is JUST normal swelling.

  • i took it easy yesterday and had my feet up all night. My feet were huge this morning- so much that the tops of my feet are painful to the touch. Also had headache but it went away after hot shower. At work now, sitting down, and they feet/ankles are so fat- gross!
  • My mom had pre-e with her first pregnancy, and she has been my go-to lady.  If you can press on the swollen bits and leave an indentation that last more than a second or two, get your BP checked.  Leaving a dent is a good indicator that there is a problem, however, it's not the only indicator.  This is how we learned about my BP issues.

My legs/feet swell like crazy now and they are even worse when I sit down all day at work and I wear flats every day. What did you have for dinner? Even though you were drinking a ton of water, the dinner could have been loaded with salt and you could be retaining water from that.
