STMs- New Crib Mattress?

Will you be buying baby #2 (or whatever) a new crib mattress?  When I was pregnant with DS #2, five years ago, there was a big deal about every baby having their own mattress due to the risk of SIDS.

When I really looked into it, it was more that if baby spits up, pees, etc., it could get into the mattress and cause fumes to develop, which could potentially lead to SIDS.

The other side of the argument was that most crib mattresses are waterproof, plus if you add the waterproof mattress pad, it shouldn't be an issue.

I never bought a new mattress for #2, and now that #3 is on the way, I'm not really sure how I feel.

I mean, kids are in daycare and use the same mattresses all the time.

  • We are not buying a new mattress. DD is still sleeping in the crib now but we will be transitioning her to a twin bed around her birthday in June (she will be 2) and we think this will be about the same time the new LO will be transitioning out of the bassinet so he will get the crib and its mattress.

We were originally going to get DD a toddler bed so that would mean would need another mattress but DH's brother was getting rid of an almost new twin bed so this will save us some $$.

  • We are not buying a new crib mattress either. We bought a really good mattress for DS1, and it will be a little over 2 yrs old once DS2 starts using it. It still feels firm and looks just like it did when we bought it, so I'm not concerned about any increased SIDS risks.

  • We are using the same mattress. I guess I never saw any of that SIDS stuff. DS never spit up and there were always mattress protectors on it if he (rarely) peed. Also, the whole outside of the mattress itself is a plastic material and waterproof...maybe they are referring to traditional older mattresses that are softer on the outside? Who knows.

June 2010-April 2012: Lots of trying, chlomid, gonal-f, with triggers, without, IUI's and tons of BFNs
    May2012: Letrozole + IUI = BFP!!!! Due 2/10/13
  • The only reason we bought a new mattress is because DS is now in a toddler bed, so I moved his mattress with him. Both mattresses are waterproof, so SIDS was not a consideration.

  • I think with the SIDS research, it's the toxins in the waterproofing layer that really add to the concern. DS will still be using his crib mattress in his toddler bed, but even if that weren't the case, I'd still be buying a new mattress.
  • I think the biggest deal is the firmness, and if that is okay, I would definately reuse it.

  • We never really liked our first mattress so we bought a new one with DS2 but we are not buying another one for DS3.

  • I'm on the same mattress since baby #1.  I have a rotation where I flip the mattress consistently and I also keep a waterproof pad on it, so there is no risk of urine or puke getting into it.  The mattress still feels supportive and perfectly comfortable.

It helps that my babies don't end up in their crib until they are 6 months or so and that I move my kids to big kid beds early (DS1 at 17 months, DS2 at 23 months and DD will move at 23 months), so it hasn't gotten a TON of use for three kids.

I'll use the same mattress for #4.

  • Of all the things "suspected to cause SIDS", the mattress we purchased and have been using in our own home with no structural damage is the very least of our concerns.

  • DH doesn't want DD out of her crib any time soon so it looks like we'll end up with a second crib. If he changes his mind before LO#2 arrives we'll keep DD's mattress for number 2.
