1st Trimester

How much are you exercising??

I've been running for a couple of years now, and since finding out I'm pregnant I've switched to walking at the request of DH.

I've been walking a path around my house that takes me about an hour and 15 mins/ 5 times a week and was just curious how much everybody is trying to do.

Just wondering what everybody's doc has cleared as being "safe" ??

Re: How much are you exercising??

  • i usually walk/jog on the treadmill 30 minutes a day.  I stopped when I found out I was pregnant, just to wait and get the doctor's clear.  So i hope to get the all clear to continue on monday.

  • My doctor said it's fine to contiunue whatever you have been doing, but not to add anything more strenuous.  I think you would be fine to run as long as you don't overdo it.  Walking or swimming are probably the best she said though.

     Check with your doctor though.

  • do you wanna know how much i should be exercising if i wasn't a big ole' tired lump of pregnancy or how much i really am...

i have been absent from the gym for weeks.  Embarrassed

BUT - i think things are starting to get a little better.  i'm finally starting to feel not-so sick and feel as though i have a little more energy... so that said, i'm planning on going back.  asap.  i swear.  starting monday.  hahaha.

i am not a doc - but my ob told me that whatever i had been doing before my BFP was fine.  he said that there is no recent (or concrete) evidence that you should keep your heart rate under 140.  he said he recently read a medical article about "world class athletes" who continued training throughout their pregnancy and had perfectly healhty babies.  he just said to be sure i'm not starting anything new that my body isn't used to.  good luck. :)

  • If you've been running for yours there's absolutely no reason to stop.  In fact, you'll feel better if you keep running!  If you're unsure, of course call your dr.  They say not to push yourself further than where you were comfortable pre-pg.  I am trying to walk 3-4 miles a day, but we've had a spurt of cold dry air, which is terrible for my asthma, so I haven't been able to work out all week (I live in a major city, so there's no shopping mall around to walk in inside!).

  • My doctor said moderate exercise is completely safe and to just make sure I had enough breath to hold a conversation. Unfortunately, I've been too exhausted to do anything since BFP. I've just been walking my dog about 3-4 times a week in the mornings.

  • I have been running for over 10 years and I am considered somewhat "high risk" because I have a heart shaped uterus and I've miscarried twice (both blighted ovums).

My dr. knows that I run and said it is fine to continue with my normal routine as long as I don't run any marathons or get my heart rate up too high.

There is no reason why you can't continue to run. Exercising is good for you and the baby.  You have to give up enough stuff when you are pregnant - exercise is not one of them.

I still run 6 days a week and I do pilates and I lift weights. Even when I don't feel like it - I still try and I usually end up feeling better after.  Before I got pregnant I was running appx. 45-50 miles per week.  I've dropped it down to about 35 miles per week. I run 6 days, for about 5-6 miles per day. I used to do long runs on saturdays (10+ miles) - but I don't do that anymore just so I don't wear myself out.

  • I'm with PP's.  Just be sure to wear a heart rate monitor.  I did a couple of triathlons this past summer, and so my doctor told me I was fine to continue what I was doing, but to pay close attention to my heart rate.  It's normally safe to keep your heart rate below 140.  But, in my case, the dr said to keep it to around 120.

  • Thanks for the input! I just need to convince my hubby, he's scared I'm gonna shake that baby loose or something! :)

  • my doc said it was ok to continue on w/ whatever i was doing before - as long as my hr didn't get about 140, and i didn't get too hot. i ran before, and will continue too - just a little slower than normal, and do everything else - lifting etc. she did tell me to just be careful with ab exercises and not do anything too strenuous- ie) weighted decline bench and stuff like that.

think charlotte from the satc movie- keep runnin! (check with your doc too tho)

  • I have been running continuously for a few years and do long runs (up to 15 miles) on the weekends.  Since BFP, I have continued to run, but not for as long.  Even thought I am pregnant with twins, my doctor said this was completely safe and just to follow my body's signals.  I have also continued to life weights.  This is all on the days I am not too tired to move.

  • I used to run about 8-10 miles per day pre pregnancy.  Since being pregnant I still run abou 3-4 miles 4-5 days per week and do a High Intensity step class 2 x per week.
  • I just took my HPT on last Friday, I have been doing 40 minutes on the treadmill, walking at an incline and keeping my heart rate around 120 about 5 days a week.

I also have been doing yoga regularly for the past couple of years, I do this routine on DirectTV Fit TV chanell 261, It is called Namaste Yoga. I haven't done it since finding out, not sure if I need to modify the poses at all.

Wish I had the time to do more, but I am going to try to walk almost every day and keep up with yoga..throughout...

  • I walk at least 3 miles every day and then swim 40 minutes 3x each week. ?
  • I am in my third tri and still running 3-4 miles 3 times per week. I have had to cut back on my mileage obviously but there is no reason to stop running.

Oh and most OBGYN's agree that the heart rate limitation stuff is bull...as long as you dont overheat and as long as you can breath fairly easily there is nothing to worry about. Your body will tell you when to slow down. My defn has.

  • I have been doing spinning classes, the elliptical, and walking on the treadmill. I had an injury just prior to BFP so I wasn't able to run for awhile.I didn't think it'd be smart to start running again now, but I'll see what the doc says on Monday.

  • I have not changed a thing.... Cardio for an hour 4-5 days a week, light weights and still doing pilates sit ups.

OB said if I was doing it before I could stick with it and it wouldnt hurt me or the baby. I gauge my body each day to make sure I can handle it and will continue to do this.

  • If I felt better, I'd still be working out but I stopped b/c I'm feeling crappy. Once I'm out of the 1st tri I'll probably go to the gym and walk for 30 minutes every day. My OB said the same thing - I can keep up with my normal cardio routine, just nothing extra.
