small rupture of membranes at 21wk5d...help

My cerclage was redone last thursday because the baby sac was bulging down past my first cerclage...the doctor had no idea how I hadn't fully ruptured at that point. So they used balloons to push baby back up and then resewed my cervix.

Unfortunately on sunday I started leaking fluid and I do have a leak in my membranes. I still have plenty of fluid but doctors are worred about contractions and infection.

So far my white blood cell count iso nly 10,000 its not horrible...I have been leaking fluid roughly every 3 to 4 hours a small gush wll come out...But ive gone 7 hours today with no gush :)

I am 21wks and 5 days....has anyone had this happen or know of any stores....My normal doctor sent me to a high risk hospital/doctors to treat me ... They will intervine with baby at 23 weeks if he comes but not before obviously. They have advised me that he may have defects if born that early and asked me to induce early. I declined at this time. If i begin to develope the blood born infection I said we can re address the situation until then im hanging on. I have zero signs of infection and baby is moving around and kicking like crazy.

any advice or stories ... id love to hear

ps my mom brought up all my stuff to hospital so now i have my computer since I wont be leaving until baby is born

  • I am really sorry to hear this.  I don't have any advice about this.  But, I am curious why they said they wanted to induce you now? Especially if your blood counts are good?

  • hey ...they asked me if i wanted to induce because of the medical stand point...if i can make it to lets say 24 weeks they said the survival rate of 50.50 and the defects the baby could have .... they said it was my choice ...of course i wont induce unless im deathly ill and only if the blood born infection can harm baby....ya idk this is a high tech teaching hospital to so maybe they had to give me all my options

  • Sorry to hear about your situation, mama.  This is about the same point when we found that I was dilated with a bulging bag with my DS.  We did the rescue cerclage, but I did not have the leak to deal with the rupture issue.  I did the IV antibiotics for 2 weeks, and remained on bed rest until he arrived at 35w6d.  I think the short term goal is keep an infection at bay, and to avoid PTL as long as baby is happy.  Just take it one day at a time.  Keep us posted!

Oh okay.  Tons of good vibes to you for sure.  There are a couple women on this board who had long hospitalized bed rests.  It sounds like you are in good hands.  T&P to you!

  • Sending you lots of thoughts and prayers! I hope you can stay pregnant for many more weeks. We have at least one 23-weeker on this board and she is doing amazing so its entirely possible to have a baby that early who leaves the hospital healthy.

I know you must be scared-please feel free to post here anytime. We are all cheering for you and your little one!

  • Lots of T&P!!

My water was bulging out of my cervix and discovered at 24w2d.  I layed upside down and didn't deliver until 26w2d.  My water never did break, but I eventually dilated to the point that my body went into labor they could not stop.  Unfortunately though I did not have a cerclage, which is very much in your favor.

I had a cerclage with DS2 and went to 35w4d.

It is possible to have your water break and not deliver for a while.

I don't know enough but I don't get why they would suggest inducing you unless they are confident that you won't make it to 24+ weeks.  You need to ask more questions.  At my NICU, 24weeks is considered when life begins.  There are 23-weekers out there, but it's just not a good situation, but that doesn't mean you give up either.  That's a personal decision...they told us to consider how hard they would want us to fight if DS1 was born at 24 weeks (they were sure he would be) and we said we would want to fight but also listen to his signals.

    Lots of T&P!!!!

I've been where you are. Baby A's membranes ruptured right around 20 weeks and I expeirenced the same thing you are going thru right now. It wasn't constant, but definatly picked up with her movement. I was scared out of my mind, our NICU wouldn't intervene before 24 weeks. We went 6 long/short weeks before I ended up in labor and had to deliver, on Valentines Day nonetheless...

We are now coming up on a year and overall they are both doing fantastic. They are developmentally right around their adjusted age and are doing some pretty amazing things.

Feel free to email me if you want someone to talk to while you are on bedrest or have more questions, etc. omfootballchick at yahoo dot com.

Good luck to you, you'll be in my prayers.

  • Lots of positive vibes coming your way.

I had my son at 23w5d due to IC, and a subsequent infection (got a cerclage at 23 weeks, but infection appeared 4 days later).  I hope you can stay infection free for many more weeks, and it sounds like you are in good hands.  Just take it one day at a time.

My son had a rough start and a long NICU stay, but he is doing wonderful now - we really couldn't have had a better outcome.  I know we are very, very lucky.  We were given a poor outlook as well prior to delivery (30% chance of survival at delivery), but decided to let him dictate his own course.  He was a fighter from the moment he was born - letting out a few cries before he was intubated.

Again, I know we were lucky.  We met more than a few families whose children of similar gestational ages either didn't make it or have some pretty severe disabilities now.  But, every baby is different and you won't really know until they are here.  There's several others on this board with micropreemies (including a 22-weeker) who are doing really well and overcome tough odds.  A micropreemie is not what anyone would wish for, but it is possible to have a good outcome.

((HUGS)) and best wishes to you for the coming weeks to bring very boring bedrest for you!!

  • DD was born at 22w 5 days after my water broke - no lead up - just woke up in a puddle - later they found an infection in my placenta but dont know if the infection caused the rupture or the rupture caused the infection.  I can tell you that we were very lucky - we spend 117 days in the NICU and came home a few days before my due date. She had all the "normal" micropreemie stuff (PDA, ROP, Bilateral grade II IVH, infections, so many transfusions I lost count, feeding issues, mRSA etc) - but we left with a healthy, sweet and perfect little bundle. No monitors - no major medical issues - only reflux. Our story is one of the good ones - its very possible to have a healthy take home micro-preemie. Take things one day at a time, take care of yourself and keep that baby in as long as possible! let us know if you have any questions
