Brewer pregnancy eating plan

Has anyone done this or looked into it?  I saw information about this on another forum but have not had time to research it extensively.  It "claims" to be very healthy for the baby and help with many prengnacy related ailments. In reality, it just looks like to me it is a very healthy eating plan that requires you to eat ALOT.  But I have not done it and I have not researched it.  It also seems like quite a bit of work to keep track of so many various foods, etc.

Alternatively, has anyone read about or looked into any other pregnancy eating programs?  I am feeling like an unhealthy, fat blob.  Also started having some mild m/s, indigestion, heartburn and constipation.  I feel like I would like to do some sort of healthy eating plan for pregnancy, but not sure where to look.

As an aside, I previously have lost alot of weight and kept it off and even did fitness competions, but the diet and fitness program I was previously on would not be healthy for pregnancy...so I am looking for something that is.  I even gave up my personal trainer because I absolutely know there is no way he would "tone it down" enough to be appropriate for pregnancy.  I'm scared all of this combined is going to lead to me gaining ALOT of weight if I don't start doing something.  Plus, I just want to feel better and eat healthier for my baby.  I am the sort of person who tends to do better when I have a "program" to follow.  Again, I am NOT looking for a diet.  Just wondering about the eating plans/theories out there.

Re: Brewer pregnancy eating plan

  • No, I havent heard of it but I will go take a look.

I know what you mean though, I am afraid of the weight gain too. With DD I gained 30lbs and it was HARD to take off the last 5lbs but I did do it. I am a smaller girl and I love to workout as well. I plan on keeping my workout regimen the same until I can no longer do so.

My advice to you is to keep up some exercise- just listen to your body and do what you can. Don't give it up altogether. But most importantly, don't worry about the weight gain. Worry about it when there is actually something you can do about it- after you have your LO. Since you seem like someone that is dedicated to being healthy and working out Im sure you will lose the weight. Dont stress over it now.

  • I tried to follow this diet when I was pg with my last baby. It was a really, really tough plan to follow, especially since most foods don't "count" as more than one source. Like, yogurt does not count as dairy and protein. It's one or the other. I'd say follow it loosely - try your best and see how you feel. I never thought I would eat that much! But I only gained like 10 pounds on the diet (which it's really not a diet, just a different way of eating), so I think it's worth it. Plus, it makes total sense as far as the salt intake goes, because you really do have about 50-75% more fluid in your body, and so you need more salt to even that out with your body. I didn't have any pg issues (except for an infarcted placenta at the end, but that's a whole other issue).

  • I lost about 60lbs through diet & exercise 2 years ago. I have an account with Sparkpeople.com that I used to track my calories and basically learn to eat without using prepackaged diet foods. It was great to learn about my food and how it was affecting me. I stopped tracking my calories about a year ago and have maintained my weight with no problem.

If you are not a do it yourselfer, maybe Weight Watchers would work. You shouldn't be trying to lose weight, but their theories behind eating are great and should help you in the same way I learned from Sparkpeople.

I did not give up my boot camp class, instead I told my trainer I was pregnant as soon as the stick dried - haha - so that he could help me tone it down a little. I have found my intensity is still fine at the high level, but certain moves induce nausea and dizziness so I stay away from them. Good luck!

  • I'm so intrigued by this now! It does seem like a TON of food. Some days I don't think I would mind so much, but others I think it would be tough. Working 12 hour days and eating all of my meals at work would make it a little difficult as well.

Definitely something I'm going to look into though! I keep picturing myself 40 lbs heavier and it just isn't jiving well. Clearly, I will gladly do it. But I'd rather do it knowing that it's because I'm eating healthy not because I'm stuffing my facebook with popcorn and milkshakes (not that that has happened today or anything).

  • Hadn't heard of this but after a little google-ing I think I like it. Thanks for mentioning it...I like that it has separate suggestions for vegetarians! I think I'll try to follow it as much as I can once I can handle thinking about food without gagging :)

We were encouraged to follow the Brewer diet by our Bradley instructors last time around. After consulting with my MW, we altered it a bit. She wanted me to aim for 70g protein rather than the 80-100 recommended by Brewer. She also didn't want me to eat as many calories as recommended if it meant eating beyond my appetite. I think it's a good idea to talk to your health care provider to see what they think and tailor it to your individual needs.

I attempted to do some more research about it beyond what we learned in Bradley class and I have been unable to uncover any good science-based evidence for the diet. There is little out there besides anecdotal data that suggests it prevents conditions like pre-e. If you google something like "Brewer diet evidence" you can see that there are people that are both for it and against it. One sticking point for me is that Brewer's studies were on a population that was at risk for nutritional deficiency anyway, so it makes sense that rounding out their diets was a way to improve outcomes. I have yet to see anything suggesting the results are as profound in a normal, healthy population.

    This.

With that being said, it's not necessarily an unhealthy plan, but it is a lot of food.
