If your child has had the stomach bug... come in!

DS had a stomach bug last Monday. Since then he has eaten very little and has a very hard time keeping food down. We're on day 6 of barely eating. He acts great, but yesterday all he ate was a bowl of macaroni and cheese. I took him back to the doctor on Friday, and they said that it is normal for this to happen up to a week after being sick.

FYI- I have tried so many things to get him some nutrients. Smoothies, popsicles, and offering him many different things to see if he'll eat anything. The only thing he asks for is ice cream and cupcakes (imagine that). He has only had those on his birthday party a few weeks ago.

Help! Has anyone else had their child go through this for so long? Food ideas?

We just went to cracker barrel and he ate 2 chicken tenders, applesauce, and a glass of water... before even making it out of the restaurant he threw up all over me.

  • Plenty of Pedialite!

  • He will eat when his tummy feels better.  Just keep offering and stay away for heavy, greasy foods.  DD is just getting over it now and all she has eaten 2 days is 2 gerber graduate meals.  They will know when their stomachs are ready for more.
  • All DD ate yesterday was half a pack of crackers and water. She started throwing up today so I took her to the Dr (we were there Thursday because she had a temp of 103.3). He said not to even offer food until 24 hrs after throwing up. Push liquids-water, pedialite, gator aid(sp?).

  • The stomach bug that is going around is no joke!  My entire family had it about two weeks ago.  Both my DD and I ended up in the emergency room and had to get IV fluids.  I have never been that sick in my entire life.

I would just push as much fluid as you can.  My DD doesn't like sweet things like juice or pedialite.  My pedi. recommended 1/4 gatorade, 3/4 water.  She seemed to do ok with that.  She also recommended no food for 24 hours after throwing up.  It took about that long before my DD even wanted anything..  and then it was only a few crackers.  It took about a week before we were eating like normal again.

Hope everyone recovers from this soon!  The article that I read here in North Carolina said that it is the Norovirus and is super contagious.  It SUCKS!

  • We went through frozen pedialyte pops. He would only eat the orange ones. He would also eat pieces of bananas.  It took a good 5 days for him to get back to normal. Then we started him on pediasure to get more nutrients in him. Now he is fine.
  • I am not much help but we are kind of going through the same thing right now.  DS threw up once on Thursday and was fine the rest of the day.  He was fine all day Friday, but didn't eat much.  Then he threw up Saturday morning and wouldn't eat much the entire day.  Then this morning he asked for some chicken and again,,,, he threw up all over!!!  No temp but has been having some diarrhea along with the vomiting.  This is the strangest flu that I have come across.

My peds office says to wait one hour before giving any fluids after they vomit and after that, give them little sips every 5 min.

  • Our little guy is just getting over it. It was about a week long in retrospect. We thought the diarrhea was from getting molars, but then the vomiting started. He's finally back to eating somewhat normally. Its normal for him to still throw up- he's sick but probably still getting hungry and willing to try! That's what our pedi told us yesterday. She recommended clear liquids, but anything is better than nothing. Small meals and small amounts of liquids are recommended and advance his diet as tolerated. Good luck!!
