Water broke at 27 weeks

Im on hospital bed rest thanks to pPROM. Bean #3 is about 2.6lbs... No labor yet, just being pumped with penicillin every 4 hours to prevent infection.  Ill be on IV antibiotics for 4 days, then oral for a week. Im here till 34 weeks or until I go into labor and deliver. They wont stop delivery...

Has anyone been through this? Were you able to hold off delivery for 6 weeks after your water broke?

I really miss my daughters... but I know why I am here. Im trying to stay positive, but I am so scared of a premature baby. At 34 weeks they will induce her (at which point the risk of infection is higher than the risk of prematurity), so a NICU stay is in our future no matter what.

Also, I have not had a chance to ask my doctor... at what point does a vaginal birth become safe? I would really like to avoid a c-section, but obviously that is a very small concern compared to her safety.

Re: Water broke at 27 weeks

  • I'm sorry you are going through this and I wish you all the best. I was on bedrest in the hospital at 24 weeks but my water didn't break until 27 weeks. I only last another 4 days before the babies came. However, I met a few people during our NICU stay that lasted longer after their water broke...one of them lasted a month.

Best of luck to you. Hope your LO stays nice and safe in your belly!

  • Hang in there! I think sometimes thinking about the what ifs can drive you absolutely crazy! Definitely heard of ppl lasting a while or even having their bag reseal. Just wanted to share that I had a vaginal delivery at 29 weeks. Def talk to your docs about preterm vaginal births- most used to be against it, but more and more they are thinking it may even be better. Keep us posted!

  • I am sorry you are going thru this...my water broke at 20 weeks and I was able to hold off on delevery until 26 weeks. I literally counted down the days and prayed and begged our twins to just stay put. I got steriod shots for their lungs and two rounds of antibiotics.

Good luck, hoping you make it to 34 weeks!

  • Hang in there!  My water broke on Monday evening & my son was delivered at 31 wks on Wednesday AM.
Although they were not able to hold off labor in my case, the doctors said that it was 100% possible as long as you're able to ward off infections and maintain enough amniotic fluid to support baby.
Good luck to you.  I'll be thinking of you & baby.

  • Thank you for all the stories. We are just taking it a day at a time.

The doctor told me that water levels were not a concern, since the baby makes more. But I lose so much every day. Its hard to believe its not a concern. But Im not a doctor, hehe.

  • Hi, I don't have any personal advice about the pPROM but I'm wishing you the very best and hopefully you have a long stay on bed rest!  I was on hospital bed rest for a month.   Every day and every week inside counts.  The high risk pregnancy board has a daily bed rest check in that was really supportive for me.  Keep us updated!
  • T&P for lots more weeks!!!

My son was born vaginally at 26w2d.  The doctors at our NICU were sure that they see no benefit of a c-section (in my case) and they wanted to avoid additional stress to me, knowing he would be in the NICU a while.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm sure it's very stressful and I can't imagine how hard it is to be away from your other LOs. Hang in there. I was already 36 weeks when my water broke so they didn't try to stop labor. A girl on my birth month board had pPROM at something like 22 weeks and made it to 34, I think, so there are some amazing success stories out there!

     Good luck.

  • My OB thinks that I had pPROM at around 20 weeks, but we didn't discover it until I went in for a routine ultrasound and they saw my fluid level really low and I was immediately admitted.  I was admitted to the hospital at 22w6d and they weren't able to document any amniotic fluid over 2 different speculum exams on different days, and I never leaked while in the hospital.  At 23.5 weeks they gave me the steroids to help develop her lungs.  At 26w1d (Day 24 of my hospital stay), I started spotting at 1pm, bleeding red with clots at 6pm, and had more than 6 contractions while on the monitor in my room.  They sent me to L&D, and although I had been afebrile at 7:45 in my room,  by 9pm it was 99.6 and 100.1 at 10pm.  My WBC was elevated and I was having contractions every 4 minutes. I wasn't dilated, and the baby was lying transverse.

I had a C-section and Adalyn was born at 12:17am at 1 pound 12 ounces and 12 inches long.  She is doing really well despite being born so early.  She's a little over 48 hours old and so far, no major catastrophes!

My OB said that if I didn't go into labor or developed an infection, and my fluid didn't get so low that it restricted her growth where the uterus was no longer as good an environment as the NICU, I would be delivered at 34 weeks.  She also said that when the time came, depending on how high the fluid levels were and how well the baby was tolerating contractions, how well you are dilating, etc, a vaginal birth with amniotransfusion was definitely an option.  You worry about cord collapse or cord compression for a vaginal birth with low fluid, I believe.

I don't know how you do it having daughters at home.  It must be so difficult. At my hospital, they have this weekly meeting of all the High Risk OB pregnant moms who have extended stays in the hospital and want to attend.  It was really great talking with those women and learning and sharing different coping techniques so that you can be in a healthy mental state.

Have you gotten the steroid shots already? Also, ask your OB if they can give orders for you to get a tour of your NICU.  We had one, where the charge nurse gave us a tour and gave us some really helpful information.  For us, it made it somewhat less overwhelming since we kind of knew the set-up, etc.

GL and I hope that you can make it to 34 weeks!

  • I'm so sorry this happened!  I was scared about the NICU too and other people caring for my baby but they were angels.  All the nurses were so so good at what they do.  I felt really good knowing they were taking care of her.  When my water broke early DD was breech and I had a cerclage in so I didn't get to wait on labor to start.  But had she not been breech I was going to get to deliver her vaginally (at 32 weeks).

  • Keeping you in my prayers!  I was admitted to the hospital on December 7th with my twins for pPROM at 24 weeks 6 days and was able to hold off labor until January 8th at 29 weeks 3 days.  They both weighed 3 pounds 7 ounces. My twins are still in the NICU but they are doing really well.  They are now up to 4 pounds 12 ounces and 4 pounds 10 ounces.

My best advice is to stay positive!  Know that each day that they stay in your womb is a blessing!  I had a calendar that I would mark off each morning and this really helped me stay focused!

  • I ruptured at 23w1d and delivered at 34w. it's possible! I'd start taking Vitamin C, D, cranberry supplements and probiotic pills (Culturelle) to fight off infection. Vit C and D help hold off preterm labor

  • There are FB groups for pPROM with documents with tips, advice to get you through this.

Also, use baby wipes after you pee/use bathroom, use a warm, wet washcloth once a day with antibacterial soap and clean yourself down there, use a water squirt bottle to wash yourself after every bathroom trip. I could only shower every other day so this came in useful for those days I couldn't shower. Lie as flat as possible for as long as possible and drink fluids. I sat up only to eat, pee and shower. Some days I'd do my hair and makeup too but those were tricky days. I'd do my hair while sitting down to pee
