Good experience with Wipe Warmer?

So, I know people have mentioned that the wipe warmer isn't really a necessary item, but it's something I've had a lot of interest in and am actually kind of excited about... I registered for one and received it as a gift at my last shower. I also registered for the travel wipe warmer, which we didn't receive, but I may get it anyway for the diaper bag.

Does anyone else think the wipe warmer is a good idea? Or should I just return it for store credit and get something more important?

TIA!

Re: Good experience with Wipe Warmer?

  • I never needed on w/DS.  But my sister ended up needing to go out and get one for my niece b/c she was so fussy during diaper changes.  Once she got it my niece was much happier.

  • I didn't register for one because I've heard the same thing...that it's not necessary.  However; the two girls at my shower that were most recently moms BOTH bought one for me!  They said their babies loved them and when they got to the point where they could talk, they would make comments like "oooh cold" if they had to get their diaper changed when they weren't home near the wipe warmer.  Now I'm a believer :)

  • I didn't think they were necessary either, but they really helped especially when my daughter was first born. It was still cold out and the wipes were freezing even at room temperature.

  • We use one for DS1 and have been happy with it.  He doesn't have any problems with a "cold" wipe from the diaper bag if we are out.  When he was first born he would scream every time we changed his diaper, and I think the warm wipes helped.

  • my sister-in-law, who has a 4 month old, told me i should really get a wipe warmer.
but all the reviews i read say they just dry out the wipes, so i don't think i will bother.

she did also suggest just balling up the wipe in your fist for a minute or to to warm it slightly. i can see myself actually trying that.

  • All the mom's that I know who've used them really didn't like them.  Yes their LOs were a bit less fussy with the warm wipe but the down sides out weighed the good for them.

The two things I have heard the most are they either 1) dry the wipes out so the are worthless and/or 2) the warmer creates an ideal environment for bacteria and germ growth.

  • We had a wipe warmer, and it is still plugged in. Occasionally, DD's first diaper change in the am is on the changing pad still, and on those occasion, we still use the warm wipes. She doesn't care if it is warm or cool, but in general, has a pretty laid back disposition. I certainly wouldn't say that we had a bad experience with a wipe warmer (and even though my mom mocked me for registering for the wipe warmer, she was the one at the store buying the travel wipe warmer which I never even asked for). However, it was completely unnecessary.

My feelings on the whole baby gear discussion: When I was registering before DD, I wanted to make sure I had every little gadget and toy and bouncy seat we could ever possibly need. After having all this stuff in my house, and seeing what we actually use and for how long, I have a much more minimalist approach to the baby stuff. Especially since we are still planning on more kids, so it isn't like we can just clear it out - we keep storing all the clothes and toys and gear for future babies, but adding more stuff to it.

  • It sounds like it's going to be one of this "wait and see" items for after LO arrives. She may love the warm wipes or it may not matter... I'll probably hold off on the travel one for now. I'm not concerned about the wipes drying out - it comes with a sponge that you keep wet in the bottom. And as far as bacteria, the description states that it "is treated with an EPA approved additive that inhibits growth of microorganisms."

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • They are a fire hazard and have seen many claims where the fire originated from the wipe warmer. I would not get one!

  • A wipe warmer is the one thing that my friends with kids repeatedly tell me I need to get. They all say it's the item that seems unnecessary but is actually a lifesaver.

  • Waste of money. I stopped using mine.  It dried out the wipes and turned the corners yellow.  Gave it away.  Didnt register for a new one and don't plan on b uying one either.
