Preemies

34,35 and 36 weekers- please come in!

I have preeclampsia and my fluid is quickly dropping.  At my appointment last week I was at a 9.5, Tuesday I was at a 6.5 and I have another ultrasound tomorrow.  My doctor said once I got to 5 I would need to deliver my LO.  I am just curious what everyone's NICU stay was like at this gestation and how long the stay was. Thanks!!

  • My girls were 34w5d and stayed in the NICU for 9 days. They were just feeder growers, no O2 or anything! Congrats on your LO and I hope you get to stay pregnant for as long as possible!

This is so encouraging.  We had steroid shots at 30 weeks as well.

  • 35w4d, no NICU time - he did spend 5 days (I think? is it bad I'm not sure?) in the intermediate nursery with some fairly minor (jaundice, blood sugar, eating) issues. I did not have steroid shots.

I had an amnio prior to delivery (showing the lungs were mature) and I know that at this gestation (like 34-36 weeks) preemies are really all.over. the map as far as what to expect.

I think as a general rule, most do pretty well.

  • I had our twin boys at 34/5 and they spent 17 days in the nicu. They had some breathing issues, jaundice and then were just getting the suck swallow breathe complex down. Its great that you had the steroid shot, that should help!
  • Hi,

My LO was born at exactly 35 weeks.  He was 3lbs 12 ozs and stayed in the NICU for 31 days as a feeder/grower.

I must qualify that though - the IUGR (hence his low weight for a 35 weeker) is primarily what kept him in the hospital that long.  At that size they just don't have a lot of stamina to take all the bottles, regulate their temperature, etc.  Had he not been IUGR, I suspect he would have come week within the week.

Furthermore, I was closely watched for low fluid from 28 weeks until I delivered. I mention this because my fluid was around an 8 or 9 at 28 weeks.  It hung out in the 5-8 range until 35 weeks!  Then it dropped from like a 4.5 to 1 in 12 hours (I was on hospital bed rest/monitoring the last week).

So, don't give up hope - your fluid may go back up or stay steady around 5 or 6. You're far enough along where they won't take any chances, so they will probably err on the side of delivery (I wasn't at 28 weeks, obviously).  Regardless though, a normal sized 34-35 weeker will likely be home with you in no time!

    GL!!!!!!!!!

  • My boys were 34w 3d- they spent 17 days in the NICU for the suck/swallow/breathe reflex to kick in.  They needed no oxygen and had no apnea or brady episodes.  I also had pre-e- but my fluid levels were not the reason my guys had to be delivered.  I also want to add that I had no steroid shots.
  •    I had an emergency c section at 35 weeks 3 days because my fluid had dropped to a 4 w/ no warning. Luckily LO spent no time in the NICU. Just a few hours in the nursery then roomed in w/ me. Good luck!!
  • 34 weeks 5 days

    16 days in the NICU

    She was 3lbs

    See below!

  • 36w0d twins here - had 2 steroids shots @24w. 6 hours observation in Special Care nursery and were not allowed to room in with me the first night, but other then that, no restrictions and we all went home together. DS was 4 lbs 9 oz, DD was 4 lbs 2 oz - so we did have to keep tabs on them for body temp - wore hats all the time for about 2 weeks and were layered on clothing. Best wishes for good health for mama and baby!

  • I had my second daughter at 36 weeks and she was able to come home with me.No issues, besides a little bit of jaundice.

My doctor had a 35 weeker and she was able to come home right away, as well.

I so hope you can make it to at least 35 weeks! Good luck, I can imagine how scared you are.

  • I had my first at 36 weeks. She was 5 lb. 2 oz. at birth and came home with us.  My second was born at 34 weeks and was 5 lbs at birth. She has a 7 day NICU stay.

     good luck!

  • 34 weeks due to pre-e and IUGR

    born at 3lbs 6oz

NICU for 2 weeks and special care nursery for another two for primarily feeding and growing

  • DD was born at 34w4d for no apparent reason. She spent 17 days in the NICU learning how to eat from her NG tube, then the bottle(she started breastfeeding around her original due date). She also had troube keeping her body temperature up, but other than that she was fine! Good luck!

  • I had severe pre-e and delivered at 35 weeks and 1 day.  I was hospitalized three days earlier.  My DS was only in rhe NICU for four days and so far is doing well, a good eater. I did ask my doctor for the steroid shots when she hospitalized me, and it might have helped.
  • My LO was 36 weeks, born at 5lb, 3.6 oz. She did great with breathing/temp regulation but was very sleepy at the breast and required lots of stimulation to get through a feed. She still would have gone home with us but she developed high bilirubin levels (jaundice- very common with preemies) and stayed in the special care nursery for 5 days after we were discharged. She was supplemented with formula after nursing for a day or two while I pumped after feedings.

She's done great since coming home. She's small, but I think it's more genetics at this point because I was, too. She was 16 lbs at a year, but she's walking, talking, happy and healthy.

Good luck and congrats on making it this far!

  • I had my LO at 35w0d for pre-eclampsia. I had gotten steroids around 31 weeks because they thought I may deliver early because of oligohydramnios diagnosed at 21 weeks and subsequent IUGR and comprised cord blood flow. Everything with that stabilized but then I developed pre-e at 34 weeks. Our LO only spent a day in NICU for hypoglycemia. He was hypoglycemic mostly because I'm a Type 1 diabetic and it's common for babies of diabetic moms to have low blood sugars at birth. We were fortunate to be able to take him home with us. He did have mild jaundice but it was managed on an outpatient basis and it resolved quickly. Good luck!

  • 34w6days here.  DS was 6lbs7oz at birth and stayed in the NICU 6 days because of hypoglycemia, high bilirubin levels and then finally, too much weight loss (added one day to our stay).   He only needed an IV for the 1st 2 days, and though we narrowly missed having a feeding tube placed at the end, he did not need any other assistance throughout his stay (other than warming beds and the UV lights of course).   I was admitted at 34w4days and at that gestation I couldn't get steriod shots (I asked for them in triage), but I was able to participate in a blind study on the affects of steriod shots in late term preemie births.  I don't know whether I got the shot or the placebo, but I think I got the steriods and that helped.

  • I had my LO at 36 weeks. She was 4lbs 1 oz at birth, now 6lbs 10oz. She stayed in the NICU for 13 days. Her glucose was very low in the beginning, she also couldn't keep her body warmth and she was being tube fed.

  • I delivered my boys at 34w0d. Ian was in NICU for 8 days and Jack was in NICU for 23 days (he caught an infection and had more breathing problems than Ian did, hence the longer stay). They were both home before their EDD and are doing great now :) GL hanging in there! I was on hospital bedrest with pre-e for 7 weeks, so crossing my fingers that you can hold onto your LO a little while longer!

  • My 35w2d daughter spent 1 night in the NICU mostly for observation. We were actually being discharged home when she got too cold and they sent her down to be in an isolette and be watched. She got steroid shots at 26 weeks.
  • every preemie is different. my first two were 34 weekers #1 had a 10 day stay and #2 had a 7 day stay. Both were mostly feeders and growers however, #1 did have some fluid in his lungs so was on cpap for about 1.5 days. My 3rd was a 35 weeker and came home w/ me.

Be sure you're drinking tons of fluids. With my last my fluid levels dropped very quickly. At one point they were so low they couldn't even measure it. They had me hooked up to monitors galore. They gave me a huge cup of water and told me to drink it and they'd be right back w/ another huge glass or they could hook me up to ivs. I hate needles so I downed glass after glass of water. when they measured my fluid the next morning it was in normal range. Just stay off your feet as much as you can and keep an almost constant intake of water going for your fluid.

  • Your mileage may vary, but LO was born at 35w3d and spent 4 days in the NICU. But we were anticipating his arrival, and I'd had 3 rounds of steroid shots over the course of 9 weeks. Thoughts and prayers your LO stays put and your fluid levels don't drop anymore!
  • My LO's were born at 35w1d and they were in the NICU for 11 days for feeding and gorwth. They were both born under 4 pounds and need to gain some weight before they could be discharged.
