What are you wearing for l & d?

I really don't want to wear the hospital gown this time around. Makes me feel like a "sick person" and I'm in labor not in post-op. It also makes me really claustrophobic because its so high on my neck, I feel like I can't breath. I'm planning on wearing a sports bra or tank top and something over my butt, not sure what yet. I know there is lots of leaking and going to the bathroom, so a skirt like thing?? Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

Re: What are you wearing for l & d?

  • You can check on ebay, I think I remember seeing different hospital gowns you can buy (they look a little nicer and may be shaped/cut a little different). Curious to see others' replies... I'm like you, hospital gowns make me feel like I'm sick or something.

  • I just searched it on ebay. There are some gowns called "Pretty Pushers" they're really neat.
  • I'm wearing a "t-shirt" dress that is super comfy and I don't mind if it gets messed up.

  • I'm going with a sports bra like this and probaby some pj type pants for the labour (obviously not for pushing).  I hated the hospital gown and I'm planning on declining internals so pants should be fine.  Last time I had my bra and underwear on under the gown until I went for the c-sec because I just do not do braless (and with a 36DD people should be thanking me!)

  • I got a gown online, basically a hospital gown but prettier and a little sturdier/comfier for me.  I wore it with DD and will wear it again this time.  Post-delivery I am bringing yoga pants, nursing tanks, and hoodies.

  • I'm glad you posted this - Definitely not something I had thought about! I also don't like things around my neck, so it would probably be worth looking into something. :)

  • I am fine with the hospital gown, noting I am a FTM and have no experience in the L & D arena other than a brief trip back in December.  Just seems like it's a short period of time to be concerned about what I am wearing, and I will gladly wear something that someone else can launder and not spend any extra money in the process.  Post labor, I may do a hospital gown as well, as we don't plan to have any visits other than with grandparents until I have been discharged.

  • I'm so glad you posted this, I hadn't even considered that I could wear something other than the delivery gown, I love the pretty pushers!

  • Before DS was born, my husband bought me a couple gowns online - www.gownies.com.  They're much cuter than the hospital ones :)  I plan on wearing those again.  I also bought a thin robe to wear over them, more for Postpartum.

  • I'll be ruining a hospital gown. Sure they are no fun, but hey...changing into something else will be just another reason to get her pushed out faster.

For post delivery, I have an assortment of yoga pants, loose pj pants, nursing tanks, and a nursing nightgown to choose from.

  • IMO it is just not worth it to spend money on something that is very likely to get ruined. I will be rocking a hospital gown just like last time. For PP I will wear comfy yoga/lounge pants and nursing tanks with hoodies or other tops that zip up the front. Important to remember with PP wear- if you are BFing you really want it to open in the front otherwise you have to take if off everytime it is time to feed LO.
  • Echoing those who have said you can buy custom/handmade hospital/labor gowns online. Heck, if you're crafty, you can find tutorials for making your own, too!

A quick search on Etsy produced these options. And a search for DIY maternity gowns got me this and this. Plus-sized mamas may need to look up directions for up-sizing patterns to ensure you've got enough room (all that last-minute weight gain from the baby taking on weight, and all), but otherwise, those patterns look pretty simple and one-size-fits-most.

Me? I'm fortunate enough to have a very crafty (and very bored!) retiree for a mother. She's made me three hospital/nursing gowns already, in cute prints. She was only going to make the first one, but got carried away because they were "so much fun to make!" *lol* She even took the leftover fabric from each and made matching maternity tops. The latest one will have a matching onesie for Junior, as that's all that can be made from the amount leftover. Wink

  • Make sure you ask what your hospital allows.  Mine makes you wear the gown in L&D and asks that you also wear in post pardum as well.  If you have to wear it to deliver in your hospital, you can always unbutton the neck and put your own robe on top of it.  It should be something you don't care about though because it's going to get ruined.

  • 2nd time for me & I'm sticking with the hospital gown.  I'm not big on things touching my neck but it was loose so it didn't really bother me last time.  I don't want to spend money on something that could just get messed up & have to be tossed anyway.

For the ride home, I'm taking a maxi dress again (don't want pants touching swollen/sore lady-bits!)

This is me exactly. When I was in labor with DD1 I didn't care what I was wearing... I just wanted her OUT lol. I even wore the hospital gown the next day just because I was too exhausted to care.

Disposable L&D gowns with access for monitoring and an epidural if need be. I definitely don't like hospital gowns either and these got rave reviews.  I got mine through Amazon.

  • With my second I wore a cotton t-shirt of H's.  Baby came fast.
  • Probably a maternity night gown. Also bringing a tankini for the tub.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback. I'm pretty decided on a sports bra and making a knee length wrap for my bum. I'm not big on spending $20+ on something I'm going to throw out in the hospital. Spending a couple bucks on 2 yards of remnant fabric and tying it on the side sounds like a plan. I'm so cheap... drives me crazy sometimes.

This is what I'm doing too.  Nursing sports bra and one of those stretchy jersey fold over skirts from old navy.  I think it was $10 or so for the skirt.  The thought of that gown makes me crinch and I find it very choke-y too!

  • Just chiming in for a moment, I wore a hospital gown almost the entire time I was in the hospital.  I packed all of these cute pajamas etc. and only wore one outfit to go home in.  The reason I wore a gown is because I seriously bled so bad after (I am a FTM and no one informed me about the PP bleeding).  When I was in labor I really just didn't care what was on my body as long as it was comfortable.

  • I'm going to wear my sports bra or my swimsuit top since I'm planning a water birth.

Last time I wore the hospital gown...barely.  I am normally an extremely modest person but I wanted nothing to do with trying to keep that thing on during labor.
