AW: Baby Whisperer

So, I created a horrible habit of putting LO to sleep for naps and bedtime by rocking and bouncing him.  There was a certain bounce that only I could do and it still took 20 minutes or more for him to fall asleep.  After his eyes closed, I still had to stand and pat his back for at least another 10 minutes before I could hold my breath and gently put him down in the swing or crib, all the while praying he wouldn't wake up.  If he did, the charade started all over again only to have him nap for a mere 25 minutes.  After weeks of being the only one able to get him to sleep and feeling like I ran a marathon everyday, I knew something needed to change!

A GF of mine recommended the Baby Whisperer book.  I studied every section and began "the change" on Tuesday.  Here we are on Thursday morning and for his first nap, I swaddled him, sat quietly with him for a few minutes, put him down in the crib still awake, and walked out of the room.  He has been sleeping soundly for 25 minutes now.  What a relief...and a miracle!

Bottom line-if you are like me and love your LO to death, but also love your sanity, you may want to give this a try.  I now can bump bc my arms don't feel like they're about to fall off!

Re: AW: Baby Whisperer

  • I love the baby whisperer.  I think she has some great tips, and I love the overall tone of the books.  Have you read the top sleep tips from the baby whisperer yet?  That's a good one too.

  • I used the problem solver book.  The accidental parenting section fit me to a T!

  • Oh my gosh, this book saved my life (or is in the process of). I need physical therapy for my shoulder b/c LO is so heavy and I had to rock him to sleep for so long. Her methods have saved my shoulder and my back, and now he actually naps!

  • Your LO didn't cry as soon as you set him down in the crib?  That's what mine does for naps.  Sounds like I'll have to check that book out.

On the first day, yes, he screamed!  The book reminds you that he isn't hurt-he's frustrated bc you're trying to a break a habit.  And, it's different than CIO bc you are picking him up when he cries and putting him down when he stops.  You build trust and eventually he will stop crying when you put him down or just whimper (called the mantra cry-not a real cry).

  • I did the Baby Whisperer with my DD and LOVED it because we weren't comfortable with CIO. I'm now using the methods for DS and can put him down awake! I never did this with DD and it's such a difference! I just wait until he is sleepy, kiss him, put his sound machine on, lay him in the crib and leave! I recommend the BW to everyone!
  • OP, has your LO's naps been any longer than usual?

  • Thank  you for the recommendation.

I was initially holding E for his naps because that was the only way he'd sleep for a reasonable amount of time. My right arm eventually became so sore that I got diagnosed with "tennis elbow" and had to go to physical therapy. My arm still isn't 100% better. Tongue Tied

Off to the find the book...

Not much, but we are only on day 3 and I'm not following the book to the letter.  There is info on extending naps, but my LO wakes up super happy from his 30 min. naps, so I'm letting it go for now.

  • Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you said something about this.  I wasn't really sure what I was going to try to get my LO to sleep, because rocking her to sleep and then trying to gingerly lay her down is getting old!  I just bought this and read the top tips version, and after an hour of trying PU/PD, she is asleep I hope.  Whimpering a little since she did cry quite a bit, but hopefully will sleep for a bit!  I was really thinking that I was headed for CIO, so I really hope that this works for us!

    Thank you!!
