#2 on the way a few ?s for you

so I haven't posted in a really long time but we just found out that #2 is on the way :) I am only about 4 weeks at this point so really early. I just called to see a midwife this time around and they don't want to see me till March 22. I feel like that is so far away!! They said they wait to make sure the pick up a heart beat. Is this normal? I went to regular OB with #1 but I really want to see this midwife this time around.

Also a few other questions for you mommas. Did you stop drinking coffee? I only have a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon. I did stop with #1 but things were different cause the dr scared me. I had an ultra sound at 5 weeks and they thought she looked abnormal and sent to to a specialits and stuff. (I just that is the good thing about waiting for long to get to see midwife)

Anyone take a step class while prego? I have been in a step class for months now and I want to make sure it's ok to keep going with it.

and other one is I have a moby but would you recommend a ring sling instead of a moby? just wondering for months ahead :)

I have many other concerns that I may post later about #1 and our sleeping situation, but that will come later :)

thanks ladies

Re: #2 on the way a few ?s for you

  • I'm also expecting #2 so take my opinion with a grain of salt.  I didn't even call my midwife until I was about 8 weeks along.  I knew that she couldn't do much until I was 10 weeks and she could find a heartbeat.  Think of it as one less bill you have to pay. Wink

I don't drink coffee to begin with, but my caffeine of choice is Dr. Pepper.  I can't really say that I've cut down on it, but I probably only have 3-4 glasses a week so I'm not too concerned.  As far as I've heard two glasses a day should be fine, but be careful of any other "hidden" caffeine.

I can't comment on the step class.

Personally, I recommend getting a ring sling.  I think they're just easier and if you have a screaming child that wants to be held as well as a toddler running around you might not have time to do the Moby.  I'm counting on getting a lot of use out of my ring sling once LO arrives.  Plus, it's nice to have options. Smile

  • Congrats:)  I am expecting my 3rd.   I still drink my coffee in the morning (1 cup) and another cup in the afternoon.  I think the step class is fine, they told me I can continue with whatever exercise routine/regimine I was following before I got pregnant.  I had run 2 5K's the week before I found out I was pregnant.  I cut back some, mostly because I have been tired.

When my daughter was born, my son was barely 2 and she lived in a ring sling.  I found it so much easier than a moby and I could take the sling off with her in it, and lay the whole thing in the pack and play or crib and she wouldn't wake up.

With my 2nd, they didn't want to see me for my first appointment until 11 weeks.  With this one they brought me right in because it was a huge surprise due to my IUD failing.

  • Congrats!

I saw my OB around 8-9 weeks this time around, which was no big deal to me. I am so much more relaxed this pregnancy! Lol

I gave up coffe with DS and for about the first 10 weeks with this pregnancy. I now drink about a half to one full cup per day.

I would think that a step class would be fine as long as you are used to this kind of exercise. I think the biggest thing is that you would want to start a whole new exercise routine while pregnant. I am still running 3-4 miles every few days with no problems.

The Moby wrap, IMO, would be easier than a sling with a newborn.  I didn't like my ring sling until DS was around 4 months or so. HTH!

  • Congrats!

We have one 2 year old and I am about 6 weeks pregnant now.  I believe it is pretty standard practice for health care providers to weight until 6-8 weeks for your first appointment.   We wont go in for our first appointment until February 15th.

I have stopped drinking coffee.  Not that I was drinking much before.  I didn't drink coffee with my first either.

I haven't been working out other than walks.  Usual recommendations for exercise is that it is okay to do what you have been doing, especially in the first tri, but don't push yourself too much.

  • There has been a couple of recent studies showing no effect of drinking up to 2 cups of regular coffee per day while pregnant. I kept drinking one cup per day with DD. You could switch to lattes because drip coffee had more caffeine in it than an espresso shot. As for the midwife seeing you at 10 weeks it seems fine, it's the same here in Europe. Good luck with it :-)

  • I didnt give up coffee. I limited it to 1 cup a day though.

I had a ring sling, didnt like it.

  • Also expecting #2. I don't have my first appt til 11 weeks, and that is with an OB (though I think of her as a midwife who happens to have a doctorate...she is awesome...and I still may end up with a midwife homebirth...long not related story).

Anyway, yeah totally normal for appointment. I did cut caffeine out of my diet. I had a cup of coffee in the morning and something in the afternoon. They say up to 200mg a day is okay, but it is something I'd rather not worry about...plus my M/S is so bad at this point I doubt I'd be able to drink it anyway!

I'd call your midwife and ask about the step class. Just because your appt isn't for a while doesn't mean you can't ask her questions. I think it would probably be fine during 1st tri as long as you aren't overheating, but I'd check to make sure.

Other ladies can help out more with the sling question..the only sling I have is a POS. I had a moby, cotton gauze, and Ergo and plan on getting a woven this time around, since with a toddler already I figure I'm going to wear this one even more!

  • Congratulations!

I had the opposite experience with OB vs. MW.  With DS I had an OB before we moved and I got a MW.  My OB didn't want to see me until I was 12 weeks.  This time around, I started shopping for a MW right after I found out I was pregnant (4 weeks) and had my first appt with my chosen MW at 6 weeks.  She did an U/S to confirm pregnancy; OB did not.  But as far as I've heard it's not unusual to not see your OB/MW until around 12 weeks.

I did stop drinking coffee during first trimester, largely because I couldn't stomach it.  Once I could stomach it again, I began drinking it again.  Mostly just a cup in the morning and a cup in the afternoon.

I have not taken a step class while pregnant, or any other exercise class/regimen while pregnant, but I have heard that pregnant women may continue their pre-pregnancy exercise routine throughout pregnancy without worry (skip the ab workouts though).  They just don't want you to start something rigorous once you become pregnant.

I have a Moby and I love it.  I had wanted a ring sling but never got one and I don't see the need for both a Moby and a ring sling, so I'll just be sticking with the Moby.  Though I'm sure the ease and convenience the ring sling provides when you put it on would be much nicer than the Moby, especially when you have a toddler to chase after.

GL with your pregnancy and I hope you get all the answers to your questions!
