Austin Babies

what are your thoughts on sugar vs artificial sweeteners?

Specifically, syrup?

DS doesn't like to eat much breakfast these days, but the only thing he'll take a few bites out of are either a pancake or a waffle.  Sometimes some fruit to go along with it, and milk.

I'm okay with the pancake or waffle, but I'm unsure how I feel about sugar vs artificial sweetners.  I used to get the Kirklands all natural maple syrup, but there's a ton of sugar in it.  But any other brand that's sugar free has artificial sweeteners in it.  I know it doesn't matter a ton because the amount is so little (I think the max I use would probably be about a tsp) but it still makes me wonder which is the lesser of two evils, so to speak.

I noticed on days when I used full sugar syrup, most often steven is pretty hyped up and wouldn't have as good of a day at school (not every time, but it did happen).  I think he may just be a little more sensitive to sugar?  I don't know.

Right now I bought one that's sweetened with Splenda, but I'm not even sure how I feel about that for him yet, since it's still pretty new.

I'm definitely not one of those moms that's crazy about 'no sugar', but I think in the morning I'd like to avoid it as much as possible so his day isn't out of sorts right off the bat, ya know?

Your thoughts?

  • I would only do real sugar or stevia, if at all possible.  Most of the other artificial sweeteners are chemically gross.

  • Will he eat them without the syrup? Could you try a little naturally sweetened jam (so less of an amount of sweetened "stuff" on the pancakes/waffles)?

As for your big Q: I think the real stuff (in moderation) is better for you than the fake stuff (in any amount). Not just with sweeteners, but with most things. You can take that with a grain of salt, as we do not have children yet. :-)

    Ditto this.

  • Real all the way.

I remember reading some things in Lyndsay's blog about how some sugars can ferment with overgrowths of yeast in the gut? Leads to sort of an almost drunken euphoria (manic, hyperactive kiddo), until one must almost literally "sober up" which then leads to a withdrawal type behavior (sullen, "misbehaved", unhappy, tantrumish). I'm wildly paraphrasing and I need to go to sleep... I've been awake too long. But something to consider!

  • Try out Agave nectar - its not quite syrup sweet, but it is a good substitution to try.
  • i also fall in the i'd rather give/have real sugar than artificial. when my niece comes, i do powdered sugar even though she usually has syrup at home (she thinks the "snow" is fun)!

I was going to say to try agave or honey. (I can't stand the taste of agave)

I know for some people Agave Nectar bothers their digestive system. https://www.livestrong.com/article/308147-side-effects-of-using-agave-syrup/ I also recall a friend doing research on it and saying it increases the chance of miscarriage, but I don't have a reference for that.

We stick to real sugar as much as possible.

  • Will he eat it with honey? That's what I put on stuff for DS and he loves it.

Oddly enough, I've actually found that different brands have different tastes - a lot like stevia. I hated the one by Madhava, but love the one by Milagro. As in the tequia. Haha.

  • I would much rather my kid have more real sugar than any fake sugar. I feel the same way for myself. I don't do any artificial sweeteners, if anything cause I just hate the taste.
  • I'm a *huge* fan of aspertame for me (got to have my diet coke!), but when it comes to Kate we only do real sugar.  I try pretty hard to avoid HFCS too.  Ditto the rec for honey.

  • I was going to suggest honey, too.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Ditto others on the real sugar.  We buy Grade B Maple Sugar which actually has a lot of good stuff in it.  It's the thicker stuff from the end of time they are tapping the tree and its full of good minerals.  That said it's still sugar, but it's low processed (like raw honey).  I end up melting some coconut oil and then doing half and half with syrup to dilute it.  I've also tried a butter + syrup + cinnmaon mixture that the kids can spread on the pancakes this weekend and it was really good!  I'm thinking that I can slowly decrease the amt of syrup over time.

  • I would avoid agave nectar, or at least do your own research before trying it. It is heavily processed with tons of chemicals and has a fructose content higher than HFCS. Unrefined honey, grade B maple syrup, and limited regular sugar are safer in my book.

I was going to suggest trying to have him use honey.  I got away with using honey instead of syrup on pancakes and waffles with Abby until she was about 4. Now she insists on  syrup when she eats pancakes and I also do peanut butter or a little natural fruit spread on waffles.

If not I would definitely do sugar over an artificial sweetener.

  • Another alternative with less of a sugar spike (lower glycemic index) is brown rice sugar, which is sold at health food stores and Central Mark.et. Honey and Maple Syrup are just as bad when it comes to how your blood sugar reacts, love them though I do!
