I'm using plain silk ribbon in a color that will coordinate with the colors in the room. I am doing a beach themed nursery and I found some pin/hooks that have seashells on them to hang the letters from. I also saw hooks with other designs, to match other themes.
My husband hung them on my daughters wall while I was still in the hospital since we didn't pick her name until she was born. He hung them directly on the wall in a diagonal line slightly slopping downwards to the right. I was really impressed how much I liked it, since I usually like to be involved in all that stuff. I think you could definitely do that for a boy so you don't have ribbon.
DD's letters have been securely above her crib/bed for 4 years with the sticky stuff that is a bit like putty. They are high enough up that they aren't pulled on, but not 1 of the letters has fallen off or fallen sideways in that time.

for those that said adhesive - even above the crib? (i know one poster did say hers were above the crib). The lady who makes the letters says the people who cut the wood reccommend those 3M strips and will also make the letters not as thick of you wish.
hmmmmm... for some reason i was hoping for like a hole in the back of the wood and just hang it on a nail.....
we used command strips because of the whole ribbon looks girly thing. they work great! I bought the ones that hold 5 lbs just to make sure they were really stuck up there well and I followed the directions. I washed the wall first, let it dry. stuck it up for 30 minutes then stuck the letters on and I haven't had a problem.
To my boys: I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew

That is so cute yur DH hung the letters for you! We are not deciding on a name until LO is born, too. Did you buy sets of letters for your top names? Thanks!
I am using the command picture frame hangers. They are amazing. One end sticks to the wall with the removable pull putty tab thing. Another piece sticks to the picture frame and they almost velcro together (much better than velcro though)
That's how I hang all my pictures and nothing has ever fallen.
I didn't read the other responses, so may be a repeat, but we hung DS's letters with ribbon. It didn't turn out girly, IMO. I bought blue ribbon without any frills, sparkles, ruffles, etc. It turned out really cute!
If you don't want to use ribbon, though, you could just hang them directly on the wall. Is DH handy? Have him bore out a hole on the back of each one where they can hang on a nail head.
Re: Wall Letters - how to hang?
Ooooooh good question!! I was just thinking this last night!
I was thinking of using those adhesive strips, like these: https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/231804/Scotch-Reusable-Adhesive-Strips-1-x/?Channel=Google&mr:trackingCode=40F4381C-D783-DF11-BC8B-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA&cm_mmc=Mercent-_-Googlepla-_-Office_Supplies+Tape_Adhesives-_-231804&mr:adType=pla

This is what I was going to suggest too.
