  BG's arent' good for newborns (the one size) b/c they don't start weight limit wise until around 10 lbs or so   My best advice for newborns would be either prefolds, fitteds, or all-in-ones.  I'm expecting in Feb. and  will be using prefolds for the bulk of my newborn stash.  Here are a couple of links to help you.  HTH!

  Here's what works for us with our newborn:

  I wholeheartedly agree that BumGenius just do not work well at all with a newborn. ?We did the Jillian's Drawers trial which had two BG (a pocket & an all in one) and both leaked horribly because he was just too small for them even at 8 lbs 7 oz. ?

  We're using Kissaluvs, prefolds, Thirsties Fab Fitted & Thirsties All in One. ?I'm sure there are a lot of other types out there though that we've never tried.?

  Not sure what we'll go with when he's older. I might try another trial from Jillian's to check out different things.?

  I think it really depends on what you like

   

  For us prefolds never worked. We like our KL0 fitteds but really preferred our BG AIO Xsmall.

   

  You're right about the BG... the one size ones are bulky and won't fit a newborn. If you're looking for One Size diapers I love our Wahmies... they "shrink" to an incredibly small size and after trying 9 different brands (all pockets though, no experience with OS fitteds here yet) of one size diapers, that's the only one I'd ever put on a newborn.

   

  If you'd rather go with smaller sizes, I'd look into BG AIO extra small. In my experience you don't need a huge amount of room for inserts and stuff cause tiny babies poop all the time so you end up changing diapers more often even if they aren't wet at all . My thinking here was always the least amount of fabric possible.

   

  I liked the fitteds but the covers just made it all bulkier 

   

  But that's all a personal preference... I like One size diapers because I'll get more use out of them, plus they are easier to sell if you choose to go with another brand.

  We're using pfs on DD right now and they work so well!  I've only had one leak instance and it was a diaper DH put on in the very beginning, he was afraid of making it too tight on her.  They're also really cost effective.  If cost is a concern for you I'd recommend going with prefolds because of the short amount of time they are in them.  Our newborn stash of 7 various covers, 30 pfs from greenmountaindiapers.com, 30 wipes and a snappi cost $200.  It could be done for less though with fewer and cheaper covers.  I've heard a lot of people really like prowrap covers, I just didn't want plasticky material on her skin so our covers were a little more expensive.

  After the 10 lb mark we'll still be doing pfs, just larger ones and Mommy's Touch one size covers.  People use the BumGenius or other all in ones because of the convenience, but prefolds are really easy.  They're not the old school ones anymore.  We have one all in one and I really don't like it, it's not nearly as absorbant as the pfs.  Good luck with your cd decisions, there is a ton of info out there and a ton of options!

  I think Kissaluvs are great for the newborn stage. I also have prefolds, Thirsties Fab Fitteds, and Thirsties All in Ones. All have worked well, but I prefer fitteds for newborns. They hold everything in really well. 

  I think for the next baby that the prefolds will be okay, but it was kind of overwhelming for me to figure that out, plus the breastfeeding, plus waking up every 2 hours, and adjust to being a new mom. It's not hard, but I prefer using something easier.

  Honestly, as much as cloth works better for holding nb poop in, if I could do it over, I'd wait until the baby fit into bigger diapers (one-size or the ones we're using for the next stage that are 8-20 lb) and just use disposables for the first few weeks. It would have been aLOT cheaper than all the diapers I bought, although the good news is that I'll have these for the next baby.

  We're starting with the XS kissaluvs rental from Sunshine Diapers and 4 XS thirsties covers.

   

  Not sure what I'm going to do yet when the rental is over.

  FWIW, our DD started wearing BG's at about 9lbs and never had a problem with them.  They're the primary diaper in my stash.  Prior to the BGs she stuck mainly with prefolds and covers.  She was 7lbs 14oz at birth so it didn't take long until she was in the BGs - she was 1 month old in my siggy pic and wearing a BG in those poses.
