Baby Names

Brennan for a girl?

DH and I are ttc #2 and are discussing names. H wants Brennan for a girl. It's is a family last name and I do love it, but for a boy, which he doesn't want.

I usually hate boy names for girls (though much to my dismay there are a few male Ainsleys), and those are the ones accepted by society as unisex. This is absolutely a boys name. Am I wrong? Could it be pretty for a girl (Brennan Avery, Brennan Marie)?

I hate being a beotch about this and vetoing him (especially when I'm trying to veto Blaise for a boy's name), but I really don't want to be those crazy parents who named their kid something stupid.

I just did a bit of searching as I wrote this and found this website. All the way at the bottom it mentions it as a "boys name but workable for a girl."

Re: Brennan for a girl?

  • I don't like Brennan for a girl at all. Sorry.

  • I definitely think it's a boy's name. However, I like Brennan for a girl a lot more than I like Peyton or Parker for a girl. I don't think Brennan Avery would work for a daughter AT ALL. If you decide on Brennan, I think you need a very feminine middle name. Marie is pretty.

  • It's a boy name imo.  My cousin's son is Brennan and I cannot imagine it ever being a girl name.

    Use Brenna for a girl

  • I think of it as a boy name.

  • Use Brenna!!!  Brenna Marie is a great name!
  • Use Brenna!!!  Brenna Marie is a great name! Or what about Brynn?
  • I think its cute for a girl but then again I know a female Brennen.  She did say that she's never met another female Brennen.  Brynn might be a good compromise.
  • I know a boy Brennan.  To me, it's a masculine/boy name.
  • is all boy!

  • I think of Brennan as a boy too.  Although, not saying I go off of this, but the most recent PBK catalog had Brannan for a girl (which I also thought was a boys name).
  • Like others have suggested, you could use Brenna!! That's the name we have chosen for our DD.  Or Brynn?

Brennan definitely sounds more "boy" to me, but if you DO decide to use it, go with a very feminine middle name.  Brennan Marie sounds nice.

  • You could use Brennan as a MN for a girl.  Workable compromise?

  • I see I'm squarely in the minority, but I would totally do it.  Boy-ish surname-names on girls are a total guilty pleasure for me, and Brennan is a perfect example of what I love about them.  Especially since it's a family name for you guys.  In the South, we would double it up, I'm thinking:  Mary Brennan.

However, I also think that Brenna is super sweet (I used to nanny for the most adorable little girl named Brenna, love her!) and I can definitely see Brennan as a girl's mn.

  • I know a girl named Brennan, and I think Brennan Avery & Brennan Marie are both really pretty.  I also love that it is a family name for you.  But I also love the unisex names.

  • The first person I ever met with this name was a girl, so I always assumed it was a girl's name.  It wasn't until I got older that I found out it was a boy's name.  It seems really feminine to me (I had assumed that it was a female form of Brendan).  I say go for it.

  • I would totally side-eye Brennan on a girl.

    I LOVE Brenna though.

Why is your DH against using Brennan for a boy? I think it's a great boy's name!

  • Not bad for a girl. Brenna is probably a better choice. I hate Brynn.

  • I know someone who named their girl Brennan and I think its strange every time I say it. It doesn't help that the middle name is unisex either. Brenna would definitely be a better option!

  • First, I smugly shared this with DH. He said he doesn't care what "you" think. I reminded him he needs to care what I think :-)

Second, I didn't realize Avery was a boy's name, I thought it was super feminine, hmm. Then again my only knowledge of the name comes from the pretty Avery on 30 Rock.

Third, My cousin is Brenna, so I'll probably refrain from that name and just move on. I might give him Brennan as a middle name, but definitely not a first.

    Thanks! :-)
