feeding on 1 side/both?

hellllo all--

i have been 2 weeks nipple shield free. When i was using the shield i was feeding on both sides (aprox. 20 mins each side with a diaper change inbetween) When i visited my LC to help wean from the shield she told me to offer 1 side at each feeding, because i have a strong let down, and change diaper and offer same side.

Should i still be doing this 2 weeks later?

i was worried that he wasnt getting anymore milk, but after he came off i squeezed my boob and milk did come out...

he is also more satisfied sooner and only nursing approx 20 mins on 1 side without the shield.

when we went to the dr. last monday he was 11lbs 11oz and i had DH weigh him yesterday (weighing himself then holding the baby) and he was 12+ and we are having wet/poopy diapers.

when i go back towork and pump should i put 1 side during a session or 2 sides?

sorry for all the questions!! TIA <3

Re: feeding on 1 side/both?

  • DD is 3 months old and always fed only from 1 side per feeding.

  • I feed from one side only per session, but I think the general recommendation is to feed the first side and try to ensure they do a good job emptying the breast before offering the other one, no matter how long that takes. When you go back to work, are you using a double electric pump? I would think that the most efficient way to get the milk you need is to pump both breasts if it can easily be done!

  • My son only ever ate from one side at a time and he did very well but when I went back to work I could only pump once or twice a day so I pumped both sides at once. The pump was no where near as good at empty my breast as ds was so I had to pump both to get what ds would eat at one feeding.

It is better if your lo empty's a breast so that lo gets the right formilk to hindmilk ratio if lo only gets the foremilk it can cause problems.

  • I still block feed due to oversupply and use one side only for about 2 feedings, sometimes in the evenings I'll switch sides earlier if he's clustering. The bottom line is follow your baby's cues, if he seems satisfied then one side is probably plenty. About your pumping question. I pump both sides, but am careful to match only what he takes while I'm gone. I find that I don't have to pump as often to match his ounces.

  • I feed one side.  Then, I burp.  Then, I offer the second side.  The second side is usually much shorter.  The next feeding, I start on the shorter side from the last session.  It seems to work.
