Harder to carry boys vs. girls?

There's so much drama leading up to this topic, but I will try to keep most of it out of this.

In an attempt make my hubs feel bad about making a girl, to discount the difficulties that have plagued me this pregnancy, and to once again show her preference of the chick my BIL has knocked up with a boy, my MIL says "well, it's much harder to carry a boy than it is to carry a girl." (this, from the woman who miscarried 3 girls and only successfully carried two boys.)

Ive searched the Internet for 2 hours now, and can't find one single article to support her claim. I'm furious about this comment from her, for so many reasons, but mostly because I think she made it up just to cause us emotional pain.

So, am I a horrible researcher, or is she just a lying jerk?

Re: Harder to carry boys vs. girls?

  • Wow. Your MIL is really grasping for strings here. I think pregnancies vary from person to person, during what time in life, what health conditions, and what number child it is...waaaay before gender is even considered! I don't know what I'm having, but my mom said that my labor was the worst and I'm in the only girl with three brothers.

We should get a survey together: gender v. pregnancy difficulty. The results might surprise us or shut her up ;)

  • Most of the friends I have that have had boys, their pregnancy is completely different than when they had girls. I'm not sure if there is scientific documentation but more personal opinions. but I have seen the difference within friends that support your MIL.

  • Ummm...Ok!

Every woman every pregancy is different.....There is no evidence of what she is saying.

With my dd, I was SICK as a dog the ENTIRE 9 months. With my ds I was sick mainly in my first trimester. I did get sick occasionally later on but NOTHING like with my dd.

My OB did say that woman that are pg with girls tend to have more M/S than those carring boys BUT that is NOT always the case.

    Don't believe her.

  • I'm having a boy, and have had an extremely easy pregnancy.
  • I'm with everyone else; the woman is making it up.  I'm having a boy and have never felt better in my life!  My sister had two boys, and with the first she felt great, but the second one was more difficult for her.  I have many friends with children and their pregnancy stories are as varied as could be!  Every pregnancy is different for every woman.

Ignore her negativity and lies, and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!!

  • Thanks ladies... You confirmed what I'd always been told: every pregnancy is different for every woman, pretty much every time.

Thank you for helping me feel better, and for giving my hubs something to read that makes him feel better too. :)

  • That does not sound like science. I call bs.

  • Since each pregnancy and each woman can be different than the next, that could just be a coincidence for some people..

My first pregnancy was a girl, this time I'm having a boy, and they have both been/felt the EXACT same (no sickness, no complications, etc.).

  • Not only is this complete B.S.!...I think most wives tales say the exact opposite.  That carrying a girl causes more morning sickness.

I'm not saying that's true at all, but My sister & Mom have had both and seen zero difference in their pregnancy symptoms!

Don't worry MIL's just say mean things sometimes!

  • I totally agree that every pregnancy is different! However, according to my experience - carrying a boy was harder in the sense that I had a MUCH larger appetite, the boys were MUCH bigger than DD and as a result I got SO much bigger (by 25 lbs), had horrific stretch marks as a result, one DS pregnancy left me with PUPPPS (which is more common in boys than girls) and the pregnancies were generally harder on my body with boys vs. girls. However, I will say my morning sickness was worse with DD and I had strange instances of a pinched nerve in my back due to how DD moves around. Overall, my appetite and cravings with DD have been much more under control and I've put on significantly less weight!

either way - take whatever MIL or anyone else says with a grain of salt. I know it's easier said than done. The head custodian at my school tells me everyday that I'm "way too big" - I just smile and walk away. It's not worth my time or energy to explain how rude she is, and all of my other co-workers tell me I look fantastic. - Not to mention I FEEL fantastic ! (compared to my previous pregnancies anyway!

  • Ugh!  So rude and such b.s.  Your research is fine.  She was just being insensitive.  I say you change your search terms to "how ignoring my mother-in-law made my life better".  Wink

No, she's a fawking idiot.  I am having a boy, and I have never been sick (no MS), ran 3-6 miles/day all the way into second tri, have had no complications, and will work up to my due date if I don't go into labor early.  The gender of the baby has nothing to do with how difficult or "easy" a pregnancy is.

This. Seriously..your MIL needs a good, swift kick to the head.
