IKEA Moms

I'm looking at the IKEA Hemnes furniture for bedrooms and was curious what color your crib was if you purchased the black-brown dressers? It looks pretty brown in the picture so wasn't sure what color everyone went with.

Also, do you use the 8-drawer dresser as a changing station or would a 6 drawer chest work also?

Re: IKEA Moms

  • My DH has a 6-drawer Hemnes dresser in the black/brown, and I think it looks more black than brown. If I were going to purchase that color for the baby, I'd probably do white with it. It'd be really hard to match it. Also, if we are talking about the same 6-drawer dresser, it's much too high to use as a changing station.

I plan on getting the 8-drawer dresser in white for the babies room.

  • We went to ikea with the intention of getting the black brown but were unhappy with how easily it scratched. We plan on using it as a changing table and I thought the pad and other items we will put on top will make a mess of the top. The white version is a harder laminate surface that did not scratch so we ended up going all white. I thought the lighter cribs looked odd with the black brown anyway. If anything I would pair it with a white crib or one of their colored cribs. If I am thinking of the right one, the 6 drawer is way too tall.. More of an upright dresser.

I agree with the bolded, unless you wanted to varathane it with the diamond coat so it wouldn't scratch. We were going to pair it with a white crib that has black brown trim, but now we're going to get the white Hemnes.

We've been using the wire racking until now because S was sharing a room, but we're getting her the upright dresser. It's definately too high to use as a change table, and I'm tall. I just use a change mat on the floor. I would go with the wide chest style of Hemnes.

We have had ours for years and gone through multiple moves and there is not a scratch on it (black-brown).

We had side tables like that, so that's what I'm going off of. But they were in a room with three kids for a few years, so probably more wear and abuse than normal. It's the only reason we've not got the kitchen table I like from Ikea, the warehouse demo looks like hell too, but I love the colour and style. Crying

  • We have the expedit shelf from Ikea in the black/brown color in the nursery with a black changing table and a black crib. Honestly? you can't even tell that they don't "match."

  • I can't answer the color question - but I can answer that we use the 8 Drawer Hemnes in white as our changing station in our house. It's the only place in-house that DD has EVER been changed since she was born.

  • i have an expresso crib and the black brown 3 drawer Hemnes dresser... its a very small room. Anyway the colors dont match exactly but they are both dark and we didnt want white furniture as the baby grows into a child and so forth. I think they look good together.

  • We have the 6 drawer and used it as a changing station until DS wouldnt lie still any longer. It's the same height as the 8 by the way so it would just depend on how much space you have. We have the white and it sure is tough unlike the black brown that would scratch easily as PPs mentioned. Our crib is the light wood Gulliver.

MJ did you see that IKEA makes the Sundvik crib in the same black-brown? It's not the solid black I would like, but better!

  • We have the black/brown 3 drawer in both of my boys rooms. For my younger we use it for his chaning table, and have the Graco Lauren crib in espresso. They match pretty well, and have a similar style.  We have the 8 drawer in white in our bedroom, and it matches our PB panel bed really well.  We haven't had any scratch issues on any of them, and had 2 of the 3 for about 3 years.

  • Yes, you're right! Sorry, it's been a long week. We in fact have the 3 drawer. Dint know what I was thinking. We do like it though.

  • We have the black-brown Hemnes 3-drawer dresser (LOVE IT!) that we also use as the changing table - it is the perfect height.  Her crib is black.  We also have a Hemnes side table in there, and a black daybed (also IKEA).  It all goes really well together.

I think you could probably get away with a dark espresso crib with that dresser as well, but the dresser really does look more black than brown.
