Bedtime bottle/bedtime routines..

What is your bedtime routine for your LO?

Our DD usually falls asleep with her nighttime bottle and then I lay her down...she usually stirs a bit about 45 min later, but then I just roll her onto her side and then she's good to go for a while usually. We usually give her a bedtime bottle no matter when she has eaten last.  I.E.: Last night she ate at 6:30 then bedtime was at 8:30. I kind of want to stop doing that though, because I know it can't last forever, especially when she starts cutting her teeth.  How do I stop this?  Do you give your LO a bottle before bedtime?  Trying to get a routine that is realistic into her young toddler years!

I also think she associates bottle with bedtime (obviously) because a lot of time her naps during the day are right after a bottle.

Curious about what your schedule is and if giving her a bottle at night is something most of us do or not...

Thanks!

Re: Bedtime bottle/bedtime routines..

  • DD gets a bath about 8:15. Bedtime bottle is 8:30. I always offer her a bottle, even if it's not time- if that makes sense. Sometimes she will take it and sometimes she won't but I always offer. I lay her down in her crib about 8:45. She usually stirs a few minutes. Sometimes she will roll on her belly as she's falling asleep and I'll go back in there and roll her back over. She's usually asleep by 9pm.

I don't see a problem with offering a bedtime bottle. DS still gets a sippy of milk before bedtime. In my mind I just think they sleep better if their little tummys are full and satisfied.

  • We always give our son a bottle right before putting him down.  I don't think it's a big deal at all because we lay him down awake and he puts himself to sleep.  He will fall asleep sometimes during the bottle, but we burp him and when we lay him down he wakes up and then takes about 5 mins shuffling round, finding his comfortable spot, and his thumb and then he's out.  For daytime we don't use a bottle for naps.  He's fed upon waking and then he plays for a couple of hours and then we do a quick nap routine of singing and walking around the house and then lay him down awake.  He does the same thing as at night.  Shuffles around and puts his thumb in and goes to sleep.

Have you tried putting her down awake?  Give it a shot.  Try to get her very sleepy and then lay her down. Do it when she's not over tired (hasn't been awake for more than a couple of hours).  The morning nap is usually a good one to start with.  They are the most tired then and ready for a nap.  I was surprised at our son's ability and willingness to go down awake after we'd been rocking him to sleep until about 3 mos.  It looks like our LOs are about the same age.

This. We do bath about 7 pm, bottle and solids 7:30ish, and then usually some time for stories/snuggles. DD goes down awake in her bed. To me, I only consider it a problem if it's a sleep association.
